Mary saves?

Hey,

There was a program on called way of the Master with some fundamentalists, they were talking about the Catholic Church and her ways of errors, well what they see as errors anyway. They were reading from a Fatima pamphlet, and it was saying how Mary saves whoever wears the brown scapular from the fires of hell. They had a HUGE problem with this, how do you explain to a fundamentalist this concept of something like the scapular or when someone says Mary saves, we know Mary isn’t our savior and that Christ is, but when a pamphlet says this, that is how a Protestant will take it.
 
Only God can save. To say that Mary saves us is poor theology.

Mary prays for souls. She **pleads with her Son **for them. It is only **in that sense **that she saves.

One could say, she saved the situation for the hosts of the wedding feast at Cana because she drew Jesus’ attention to the fact that the wine was running out. She could do nothing about it personally. She had to leave that to Jesus who alone had the power to work miracles. No one else can, except as instruments, work miracles or grant salvation. Only God, and through God’s power. Sometimes, with devotions, people do choose language that isn’t accurate.

The scapular is a symbol of faithfulness. It has no intrinsic value. It’s the faith and faithfulness of the soul that matters. Jesus died on the cross for us and rose again, and because He is truly God He is our assurance of salvation.
 
I wear the scapular,not as a charm or a totem but as a symbol of my Faith in Christ,and as a visible sign of my devotion to His(our Mother).It is also a means of evangelisation as it NEVER comes off-even at the beach.It is a sacramental that is a constant reminder to me of my pledge when I was invested in it.When I sin it shames me.
 
If I see someone drowning, and I can’t swim, and I call out at the top of my lungs to the lifeguard, and the lifeguard rescues the man:
  1. The lifeguard saved him.
  2. But I saved him too, through my “intercession”.

No in honesty though, she only saves in the sense that she, like at the wedding feast, points us directly to Christ himself and tells our hearts to, " Do whatever he tells you" John 2:5
