Maryland and the P.C. of school children

According to a report in Foxnews that I read today (sorry I can’t provide a link, no matter how hard I try, my brain will not learn that skill on the pc), public school children in the state of Maryland are being taught about Islam.

I am all for tolerance of other faiths/cultures, but in most of our public school systems in our country, we canNOT teach about Christianity or even display our faith in the Trinitarian God (just ask teachers with bibles on their desks).

Why is it OK to teach about Islam, but NOT Christianity?

That’s not true. I live in MD and my daughter and sons attend public school.

I do know that in New York and another state there are city governments that are spending money on magnet schools for muslims. Now that’s really wrong.

It seems only Christianity is illegal in public schools. Hopefully the exodus from the Public School System will increase to the point where they will have to go out of business.

I’m a retired librarian from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and in my former school system they do touch on religion in the middle school social studies geography and history classes. Not in any great detail though, and, when it comes to Catholicism, without much insight. I tried to have one or two books on the various religions in the school library but it’s difficult to find accurate books written for kids of that age. I would have liked a few books that gave overviews of the various faiths and at least one book written from the point of view of an adherent to the faith. Someone should write books like this. I had several versions of the bible on the shelves and biographies of people like Billy Graham, George Fox, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Junipero Serra, etc. Much to the displeasure of some students, NO books on Satanism! I do think kids should have some knowledge of other religions.

This issue concerns me. It may not be mainstream in all Maryland schools, but it seems like they are making inroads to make it so.

I can just imagine what the ACLU mad: ) would do to the school systems here in the States if we tried to teach Christianity as a requirement course, or Catholicism in particular.

I think a lot of school teachers and administrations are afraid of being sued, therefore they try to stay away from any mention of any religion.

They do have rights that allow them to teach about religion, but again, they don’t want to take a chance on incurring a lawsuit. Even though they would probably win (unless they really were proseltyzing), it still takes time, money, and energy, things that teachers and school adminstrators do not possess in excess quantities!

i’m glad they’re learning something about islam. ignorance is most assuredly not bliss.

But the point is tomarin,any mention of Christian beliefs is for the most part forbidden in American public school systems, even IF its not strickly illegal, like another poster said, the risk of a law suit is high and not worth the risk.

I have no issues with educating others on the various faiths of the world, but NOT at the exclusion of Christianity which seems to be hapening more and more.

i think you’re assuming a lot here. how do you know, for example, that the students learning about Islam in Mo. county aren’t also learning about other major faiths such as Christianity during the course of the class? i think it would be rather remarkable if that weren’t true in this case.
