Mary's miracles and Sunday's Gospel

After reading one more time how Catholic’s “worshipping” Mary is the work of the Devil, (thanks, bibleapologist for the thread), I’ve been looking for additional justification on why Catholics venerate Mary so much. Then in Sunday’s (October 1st) Gospel I came accross this passage from Mark chapter 9 verse 38 and following:

At that time, John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.

We’ve all read many stories about Mary’s Visitations and Healings, and her message invariably is, “Follow Jesus”. I think our Lord Himself was showing us that Mary would be working to do His Will.

What are your thoughts…

Well i believe most protestant have the same misconception , thinking that Catholic are forever worshipping Mary, reason first because we don’t interces through any saints/mMary, because our prayer are strictly to Jesus Christ and nobody else. So is all about how much one understand the meaning of intercession/directly worshipping. As a protestant i respect the devotion that Catholic place highly for Mary, but please do not classified all protestant around the world think that our misconception of Catholic interces via Mary is devil.

One thing i noticed about the different of denomination in America seem to practise/teach different thing compare to Asia denomination. In fact when i ask around all my christian frez about Catholic being label as Cult, thought they heard this message taken from some America’s preacher before, but our thinking are all standard, do not believes something that might not be true, just concentrate on our spiritual life why bother who say what about others practise…We are more towards in getting those unchurch to church then any other stuff!!!

That’s correct, I don’t feel this is universal or even widespread among Protestants.

But I am suspicious that those that claim that Marian Apparitions are the Devil may actually feel that way!

As many of my Irish ancestors would say. “I think ya have the right of it!” This is something that I often point out. That Mary’s message has never changed (in all the authentic, approved apparitions) and so it remains the same as her words to the servants at the wedding feast in Cana in John 2:5(b) “Do whatever he tells you.”

Happygal, You just made a Catholic friend here! Your post is just exactly the kind of statement that I appreciate from a non-Catholic Christian. Thank you very much! What you have said is quite correct.

I agree that we tend to lump all Protestants into the same group and it is not fair, but please understand that with few exceptions, most (but not all! Thank God for Zooey and a few others around here!) of the Protestants that we encounter here in the U.S. seem to buy into this stuff. And as you have seen by now, it simply isn’t true.

Thank you for having the charity and discernment to see that.

By the way, I must confess that most American Catholics probably think that attitudes are the same all over the world, and obviously that generalization is unlikely to be true as well.

Well it IS kinda hard to ignore when the dude tells you something like that in plain English in writing on a public forum, right?

To be honest, I see this as one of the problems of non-Catholic Christianity. They lack mysticism, and many of those who are open to it are pretty radically Pentecostal/Charismatic, when in fact, I think that the Bible makes it pretty plain that God is incredibly more powerful and (literally) awe-inspiring than most people are willing to even try to get their minds around. I think that our most holy faith better disposes us to embrace the mystical side of Christianity than most all the n-C churches. Pentecostalism seems (to me) to be a very primitive and ill informed kind of mysticism that can lead to an almost Gnostic-like attitude, whereas Catholics deal with it on a different level and it draws us the deeper into our faith while increasing the faith that we have.

I’m probably not making any sense at all. I’m sorry.
