My eleven year old son is going on a trip with his friend and their family. The family had rented a place and purchased tickets before I realized they will not come home until Monday. As the family is not Catholic, my son will miss mass. I’m going to talk to our parish priest tomorrow, but am wondering if it is a simple request I could ask after mass or if I ought to set up an appointment to ask?

In general, when it is impossible to go to Mass, there is no obligation. The Church never demands the impossible. But talking to your priest is never a bad idea.

Have your son ask Father for the dispensation. It will make more of an impression on him that Mass is important, but, that dispensations are also available.
