Attending mass yesterday while my priest was delivering the homily, on the health-care mandate. A man jumped up and began yelling at the priest “NO NO THAT’S NOT RIGHT YOU’RE WRONG”!!! My priest was talking about religious freedom, the Constitution and authentic catholic teaching at that time. The priest never missed a beat. He kept on talking and the man stormed out of mass. My 7 year old looked up at me and said “dad I’m scared”. I put my arm around him and said it will be ok. After mass I told my 5th and 6th graders that these are trying times both religiously and constitutionally and people are going to be very passionate on either side of the issue. After mass everyone was giving the priest high-five’s , shaking his hand and telling him great job! I’m wondering if anyone else has ran into this at a mass?

I have not, although my parish is on the older side.

If a “man” did such a thing near me it would take a Herculean exertion of self-control on my part to avoid socking him in the jaw.

There was a similar outcry(although not vocal during the Mass) in response to our parochial vicar speaking re the civil union act.By and large the reaction was positive, with applause and a standing ovation. However,a fair number of people got up and walked out. After mass this priest was given a verbal dressing down by many parishioners who wereupset by his homily:(

Sounds to me the guy did more than show a lack of manners and decorum.

He DISRUPTED Mass, unnecessarily. That has to be considered sinful. People go out of their way to keep their children quiet. Perhaps this guy needs his own ‘crying room’.

He missed Mass. Unless he went to another church (there’s a pick-and-choose Catholic), he missed Mass through his own fault.

Don’t be that guy.

Wow. I thought my Church had surprises. Never have I seen anything like this.

Surely Mass is never the time to jump up and voice disagreement over a homily. There are plenty of opportunities to speak with the priest after Mass or make an appointment.

It showed terrible disregard for God’s House, the Mass, the priest, the congregants – and it was selfish.

The only disruption at Mass this week was my fault. I work at the church and I train the altar servers. This week, the server forgot to light the candles so the priest motioned for me to do it. I felt really bad about it. 😦

Your priest reacted exactly the way a priest should. God bless him! He deserved those high-fives and handshakes.

Nope, nothing like this at my church because our priests have yet to mention anything about the mandate. They haven’t read the letter from our bishop nor have they played the tape, though other churches in our diocese have.
I’m very disappointed in our pastor on this issue. If he’s trying to avoid controversy, it’s wrong. I WANT to hear what our bishop has to say about this, I want to know that our diocese is against this mandate. I also want to see our diocese stand up and be heard. I would like to hear our pastor’s thoughts on this in his homily, as well as our other priests. We have 3 regular priests plus one that comes in to help with the 8 am Sunday mass. Not once has this been brought up. Very disappointing.

We had one fiery homily on the topic but have not since heard the Bishop’s letter - is there a tape now too? I was hoping we would hear the letter 2 weeks ago, but neither of our parishes read it. 😦
