Is it OK to have Mass celebrated in honor of a living person? I have often read that Masses offered for the dead can help someone shorten their time in Purgatory. How do Masses offered for a living person help that person? Could anyone point to any writings of the saints on this topic? Or on how exactly Masses for the dead benefit the souls in Purgatory?

Yes, I use them sometimes, also. There is a Franciscan Mission organization that also has a $5.00 mass stipend, but I’m not at my computer, and I can’t provide the url off the top of my head.
 
I have Masses said for family members on their birthday (those living and deceased) and just for various reasons. When I request them at my parish I just say put “Special Intention”,God knows my heart and what intention I am offering that Mass for. I read someplace that one Mass said for you while you are alive are worth more than all those said after you are dead; don’t remember where I read that though, read a lot so it gets hard to remember what I read and where. Yep, I’ve read it too. I usually have a mass said for family members for birthday presents, special events, etc. The nice thing about CNEW and the Franciscan Missions is that they will send a nice mass card to the recipiant with a message, such as “happy birtday,” etc. on it. The cards are pretty, and so far, everytime I"ve sent one to someone, they have been well received.

Have you ever read anything that might indicate that offering Masses for a living person who does not know God may help give them the graces necessary to convert?
 
I have started to have Masses said for birthdays of family and friends at my parish. There seem to be plenty of Masses available at my parish, and I think they welcome the $5 stipend, as well. I usually have them listed by name, and usually (but not always) an * is put next to the name in the bulletin to indicate that it is a birthday or anniversary.

I don’t know, but I really can’t imagine that it wouldn’t help them. The mass is the highest form of prayer we can offer to God, so I can’t imagine that the graces from the mass wouldn’t help a person. I am a big fan of having masses offerered for my family, friends, souls in purgatory, etc.
