Mass for travellers in California

Hi everyone,

I am an Australian planning to travel with my family (parents and teenaged/young adult) siblings in California for the rest of December. We are unfamiliar with the territory and have no regular mass-attending relatives in the area. Could anyone make suggestions for Sunday Masses suitable to a family of six (five of whom are not presently open to the Extraordinary Form)?

For Christmas I have already told my parents that I intend to find an Extraordinary Form Midnight Mass - we will be in Los Angeles, and I have already been told to avoid the Cathedral.

Thank you in advance for any help I may receive. In summary, I am looking for liturgically sound, ordinary form Sunday Masses in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and an Extraordinary Form Midnight Mass in Los Angeles.

Someone asked a similar question about going to mass in Germany, and I’ll give the same answer.

California is a pretty big place! Where are you going to be, and when?

You can always look up churches in the Yellow Pages.
 
See Mass Times. It will give you mass times and places within any area you specify. Many of the parishes will also have web sites. You might also try the diocesan web sites.

It is probably wise to call the parish and confirm times etc. Many don’t update as often as one could wish.

I don’t have any information on which, if any, offer the EF mass.

I am trying to ensure that our trip is not marred by negative experiences of Mass, and since the dioceses of Los Angeles and San Francisco are notorious for liberality and abuse, I am hoping that with some help I will be able to avoid seeing these first hand.

Our family will be in San Francisco for the Third Sunday of Advent, and in Los Angeles for the Fourth Sunday, Christmas, and the Sunday in the Octave of Christmas.
 
I wouldn’t hold my breath for an EF Mass at midnight. There aren’t that many parishes that offer the extraordinary form at all. Here are a few if you want to check web sites and/or make phone calls.

San Francisco and Los Angeles are big cities. You could use the addresses where you are staying and go to the maps on google. Then go to the mass times site to find nearby churches and go to their websites which will probable have their bulletins with mass times. The bulletins should give you a clue what the parish is like. Or call the hotels where you’re staying for suggestions.

I still have two more days in Japan before the flight, and will continue searching. If anyone can make a recommendation even after then, please do!

The Choir at St. Theresa’s EF Mass is exellent. The Church is always crowded for the EF. Good large stable community.

If you’re able to travel a bit south from San Francisco, Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish in Santa Clara celebrates the EF Mass:

When you’re in San Francisco, try St. Stephens in Sacramento. It’s about a 1 1/2 hr drive but well worth it.

Closer to SF in Oakland is St. Margaret Mary. It’s about a 20-30 minute drive.
