Is it permitted to ask that a Mass be offered for the living?

I gave the priest a Mass stipend and asked that he offer the Mass for all the students who were starting their final exams on Friday (Melbourne Australia). At the altar, instead of saying ,“We offer this Mass today for …” as he always does he said “today many students are starting their final exams let us remember them in our prayers.”

Yes it is perfectly permissible to have a Mass offered for the living. In our bulletin they are always noted as living intentions so that the priest will not include the person’s name in the intercession for the dead. By the way, canon law requires one of the Sunday Masses to be offered for the people of the parish. It is prefered for the pastor to offer this Mass (since he is responsible for their spiritual welfare), but he can have one of the associates say this Mass if he has a schedule conflict. 👍

deaconswife, thank you for your reply. 🙂

Is it permitted for Sunday Mass to be offered for a deceased person? Last Sunday at my parish Mass was offered for Mr … I had never heard this before.

Yes it is possible to have a Sunday Mass offered for a deceased person. We have six Masses on Sunday and usually 5 are offered for the repose of the souls of various people and one for the people of the parish. Sometimes there are Sunday Mass intentions that are for the living (maybe for a couple on their anniversary, for someone with an illness, or other reasons). 🙂

Absolutely, It is a powerful intercession. I know of many answered prayers that occurred after having a Mass said/offered for a specific intention. A friend asked me to go to a Mass that was offered up for the alchohlic wife of a protestant friend of ours. She quit drinking the next day!!!

I don’t recall the exact quote but I’ve heard it said that one mass offered up for the soul of a living person has as much benefit as a thousand masses offered up for that person after they have passed away.

I have a mass offered once a week for my family. I also have masses said for everyones birthdays. I have read that one Mass said for you while you are living is equal to (I want to say it was like 10 masses. But after you die it is one Mass for your soul. It is funny though sometimes my friends will ask if everything is ok. But I simply state it is like the best insurance policy, but it is also great for help in your family, sick etc.

I have even had the priest offer masses for a special intention, for myself, when I needed a serious favor form God. It was the regular intention for the mass. I have also has masses offered for my parents, when they were ill.

The special intentions were listed as “Special intention - anonymous”

For my parents their name was listed and illness as the reason.
