I’ve been enjoying watching the Mass from Notre Dame (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) on the Hallmark Channel on Sundays (11am eastern). I am curious to know if anyone else has seen the Mass and what you think about it. The music is fantastic, and the atmosphere is very traditional and solemn. Let me know your thoughts if you’ve had the opportunity to watch.

I have seen it. I watch it after I get home from Mass on Sunday mornings.
I agree that it’s lovely and the music is awesome!

I wasn’t aware that the Hallmark Channel showed Mass on Sunday’s! I usually watch EWTN but I will check out Hallmark this Sunday, too. Thanks for the info:thumbsup:

This is the only Mass my home-bound mom can experience on Sunday morning. I have been disappointed to note that there are some abuses (the wine being consecrated in crysal or glass decanters so the the Blood must be poured into individual chalices, etc.) It doesn’t have the reverence of the EWTN Mass, but it is Holy Mass and I’m grateful that Hallmark makes it available for folks like my mom.

You don’t think the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Mass has the reverence of an EWTN Mass? I’m not sure. I guess I haven’t really thought about comparing the two. I just love the amazing Sacred Music at Notre Dame! The choirs are outstanding (much better than those on EWTN). I thought the Notre Dame Mass seemed pretty traditional…lots of incense, Latin, Kyrie in Greek etc… (and the Basilica is a pretty amazing structure). Oh well…to each his own. I also agree with you and am glad that shut-ins have the opportunity to live Mass on Sunday morning. It’s a nice agreement between the Hallmark Channel and Notre Dame.

I love the Mass from Notre Dame! I used to watch it every Sunday as I was getting ready to go to my Parish. I now go to a 11am Mass so I don’t get to see it unless I go on Sat night.

Who are all of those people who are behind the altar and stand during the consecration?

Personally, watching mass on TV seems like watching golf on TV. . . there is no point! Actually participating is great, but sitting in an armchair watching images of others doing it seems silly to me.

Especially since, to get the graces of attending mass, you actually have to attend!

But as in kaygee’s Mom’s case - being homebound, maybe this is her only opportunity? No doubt it’s better than nothing?

However, I DO agree that watching golf on TV is akin to being tortured. 😉

I have not seen it but thanks for the info. I will check it out this Sunday. I usually watch EWTN but am glad to hear Mass is offered on the Hallmark channel.

I have seen it. It has some wonderful music but it is sad to see some abuses being broadcast nationally. They give the priest’s name at the begiining. If you telephone and leave a message he’ll return your call.

If one is homebound for whatever reason, watching the Mass to hear the Word of God and join with the Church in spirit and prayer is better than nothing.

For example: a violent case of stomach flu prevented me from attending any Christmas Masses this year. However, it did not (thankfully) prevent me from laying on the sofa and watching Midnight Mass live from the Vatican, and for that I am profoundly grateful. I look forward to Midnight Mass all year long, and to have missed it entirely would have been even more upsetting than being ill.

I am also profoundly grateful that Michigan Catholic Radio sees fit to broadcast daily Mass every morning. Again, I’m in my car commuting rather than in the pew, but it’s certainly much better than listening to morning pop radio (blech).

They have to put people behind the high alter merely to accomodate all that attend. It’s usually overflowing, and even more so on a home football weekend. Those people usually stand during the consecration because there are no kneelers back there. Everyone else in the Basilica kneels. I know it’s not ideal, but it’s better than turning people away. I’m not aware of any other abuses (and I’m not sure if that’s really a true abuse…doubtful that Jesus himself really cares…I think he’s just glad that people are there). God Bless.

Listening to the homilies on EWTN can be very edifying. It’s nice to be able to participate in the Mass at my home parish and then catch the homily on EWTN later that day or during the week when I cannot attend Mass.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on the Notre Dame Mass, I will check that out.🙂

We used to watch it when we had cable, and I really enjoyed it, especially the music. Who isn’t impressed by a beautiful church?

True - being homebound puts a new spin on the equation.

I’ve seen the Mass on Hallmark a few times and I like it very much.
The homily on EWTN tends to be better though.
Some people have to watch Mass on TV because they can’t get to a Catholic Church. I know I have to watch Mass on TV sometimes because I am a live in PCA and the person I take care can not be left alone. So if I don’t have someone to come in on Sunday, then I can’t go to Mass and I have no choice but watch it on TV. plus I don’t have a license or vehicle that I can transport my client in so that I can attend Mass.
