opportunity for Mass participation, and spiritual communion.

When was spiritual communion taught ?
Is it bible based? Or only a catholic yeaching?

A number of saints have spoken about this, including the most well-known angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas. This is a very good article that may help you understand this excellent devotion that has been around for centuries.

The Prayer of Azariah, in the deuterocanonical verses of the book of Daniel, is sort of a spiritual communion:
25 Azariah stood up in the midst of the fire and prayed aloud:
. . .
38 We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no burnt offering, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you. 39 But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received; As though it were burnt offerings of rams and bulls, or tens of thousands of fat lambs, 40 So let our sacrifice be in your presence today and find favor before you; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame. (Daniel 3:25, 38-40 NABRE)
