Mass posture change?

At our last Sunday mass, the priest informed the parish that there was a change and that we should all stand while the priest is saying the Doxology ("Through Him, with Him, in Him…etc) so that the whole congregation is standing during the Great Amen. I had not heard of such a change. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Paragraph 43 of the GIRM covers this. The salient portion reads:

In the dioceses of the United States of America, they should kneel beginning after the singing or recitation of the Sanctus until after the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer, except when prevented on occasion by reasons of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some other good reason.

The “they” referred to here is “the people.”

There has been no change to this.

That is incorrect. The congregation should remain kneeling during the Eucharistic Prayer. It states in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal this: “In the dioceses of the United States of America, the faithful should kneel beginning after the singing or recitation of the Sanctus until after the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer, except when prevented on occasion by reasons of health, lack of space, the large number of people present, or some other good reason. Those who do not kneel ought to make a profound bow when the priest genuflects after the consecration. The faithful kneel after the Agnus Dei unless the Diocesan Bishop determines otherwise.”

I would take this to the priest and show him, he shold know it already but incase not show him.

As Deacon Ed said there has been no change to this. The people should kneel during the Consecration, Memorial Acclamation, Eucharistic Prayer, Doxology, and the Great Amen. They should stand after everyone is completely done singing or saying the Great Amen.

It is the rule, unless the bishop has decreed otherwise. And granted that the Bishop does not have the power to alter the GIRM, that does not prevent the bishop from doing so, putting the parish priest in a bit of a bind.

Sorry, this change doesn’t seem kosher. I’d ask Father about it, mention what the GIRM says, and if he disagrees, print off that particular page and highlight the passage. He could just be mistaken about something, or he may not be aware what exactly the GIRM states.
