Mass with both old and new translations combined

Has anyone experienced this since the beginning of the current liturgical year. When I was a mass today, a retired priest that helps out in our parish celebrated mass today and sometimes he’ll mix the two. He did a couple weeks ago. He read EP2 and I didn’t here dewfall. When It came time for the memorial acclamation he started singing “Christ has died…” Some people still respond and “and also with you”.

Old habits are hard to die. Sometime older people (like myself) do not notice when they reverse to the old translation, they are just on autopilot.

I don’t think he did it on purpose.

The old translation was the norm for almost 40 years. Our priests are fighting a valiant battle against the force of habit but its an uphill battle. They said the old translation almost every day for 40 years.

Our beloved late pastor did his best last fall and winter to prepare us. We’ve done pretty well. We still fall into the old translation when we sing the Sanctus.

It takes a while to wipe out 40 years of habit. Let’s exercise the virtue of patience.

I’ve heard priests make a few mistakes since the new translation. Priests are human and when you’ve been saying the same words every day for decades it must be very difficult to change. Even for us laypeople it’s been an adjustment so it must be even more so for priests.

We noticed on Ash Wednesday there was a sudden influx of people saying ‘and also with you’ when normally my parish is flawless with the new responses.

Some people still respond and “and also with you”.

I still do that sometimes. The new translation is a good learning experience. Saying something different from the others makes me realise I’m not focusing and snaps me out of it.

It is difficult to keep to the new text, even when alert and being careful. A moment’s inattention can make me switch.

On the other hand, I’m not the only one: Almost every day, at the preface, someone (of a group of 10-20) will end the dialogue not “It is right and just” but “It is right to give thanks and praise.” Since I have lots more changes to worry about, I don’t feel bad as long as that one keeps popping up.

Still, I do try to use the new texts. And they are coming. Just not there on automatic yet.

Oh, and as a retired priest, he may not be leading the mass daily if he concelebrates with other priests. That makes it even harder to learn the new texts, since he’s only hearing them, not reading and saying them daily.

Easy to do when you’re retired and not celebrating Mass on a daily/weekly basis.
