Maybe this is a dumb question, but here goes anyway. Is it OK to request a mass for a deceased non-catholic?

You didn’t specify if it was for someone living or deceased. My suggestion is this: If the person is living, invite them to attend the mass with you. It will be a great testimony to your faith which may spread to them as well. If the person is deceased, we believe in the communion of saints, and perhaps they are needing our prayers because they are in Purgatory. It is wholly Christian and also necessary for us to pray for every one. And pray always!

Actually, when my Lutheran grandmother died, my priest mentioned her during the Eucharistic prayer. He had never known her or met her before, and I don’t even know why he did it. I guess it was just a friendly gesture.

Whether living or dead, it’s alright to have a Mass offered up for a non-Catholic. I have heard it said that one Mass said for the soul of a living person is as effective as a thousand prayers fort that person after their death.

Why wouldn’t it? Non-Catholics can get to heaven like the rest of us so they can likewise go to Purgatory like the rest of us. If we offer a Mass for them, then it can only be because we think that they are in Purgatory. And of course if they are there, they would be part of the “Church Suffering” which of course is connected to the family of God as likewise the “Church Triumphant” (Saints in Heaven) and the “Church Militant” (members of the Church on earth).

As a non-Christian, I have to say that one of the most objectionable things people can say is words to the effect of “I’m praying for you.”

The idea that somebody might devote some kind of religious service is just, well, vomit-making.

Cabaret, if you are ever fortunate to at least make it to Purgatory, a Mass said for you will make you ecstatic with joy.

Des- Let’s pray for Cabaret (hey, I’m a poet; tho I didn’t know it). Anywho, your “at least make it to Purgatory” comment caught me off guard. Once you make it to Purgatory, aren’t you in like Flynn?

Purgatory? That’s to the south of Mirkwood and just left of Gondar, I suppose?

Or, to put it another way, should you give up your ‘absurdly making a man God’ idolatry, you might have hope of the World To Come (in other words, point that Jesus elsewhere, it may be loaded).

Don’t worry, I’ll pray for you “pretentious patronization?” “Moi?”]

I didn’t mean what it may have sounded like. Though we have been judged for Heaven, it is still a step down from Heaven since we will not yet have the full Beatific Vision of God. That’s really all i meant by that.

Sure you are already saved and you’ll eventually get to Heaven, however I still consider it a step down primarily because while there, we still do not fully share in the Beatific Vision of God. That’s all I really meant by that.

Cabaret…I am just wondering why an atheist/pagan would be on a Catholic Forum…it seems to me your only purpose on this forum is to degrade Christians/Catholics…I am sorry if it upsets you, but Jesus loves and so do I…I will pray that you find Christ and the Catholic Church. God Bless

I am just wondering why checking the details provided by a member is so difficult that it’s beyond you to have noticed that I’m a Jewess. Perhaps the urge to cliché (“purpose on this forum . . . .”) was just too overwhelming for you manage to do any other.

I’m sorry to have upset you by observing that being patronized by Christians can be somewhat annoying. I will pray that you give up your futile idolatry - or, rather, I would if I cared or thought it mattered.

Actually, as I have mentioned in discussions here, I’m here because we’re about to move to a (culturally, at least) Catholic country and I wanted to find out what Catholics believed. I’ve learned that what Catholics believe sounds fairly harmless - mind you, you could have said as much of the Constitution of the USSR.
