Okay, so I feel a little late in the game clearing this up, but I just read the passage in the aforementioned title:
34"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

35"For I came to (BA)SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW;

36and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.

So, when Jesus came the first time, was it to save? Garner support for the Christian church? From this passage, it seems divisive. Did he mean that being a Christian would mean a terrific divide from old ways to new? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Here is a bigger context:
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. 40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
I dont know what to say to answer your questions to the full extent, but someone will.

It would seem that some would have accepted Jesus, while some would not and that divide would even cross households. Is that what you were thinking?

Hello jjstanford,

In the year 40 A.D. if you told your father you were leaving Judaism for Christianity this would cause great division with your family. Today if a child told his Muslim father that he was leaving the faith for Christianity, his father might want to kill him. Yet conversion is what Jesus wants those of other faiths to do.

In these threads I have read of families torn apart simply by the divisions between Catholics and Protestants.

It is not always easy taking up the cross Christ wills us to bear for the faith.

Peace in Christ,
Steven Merten
