Matthew 27:51-53

The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. – Matthew 27:51-53

I’m wondering why something so extraordinary such as saints being raised from the dead and witnessed by many has not been recorded anywhere else besides the Gospel? I mean this is something that has never happen before in the history of humanity, it just seems strange and almost fiction (God forgive me!)…

The only explanation I can offer is these resurrected saints appeared only momentarily in the holy city before continuing their journey onto heaven.

I don’t know why this does not appear else where, however as it does appear clearly once in Holy Scripture we know it is true.

Perhaps books/writings with this account are taken as “myth” and burned?

Perhaps archeological proofs are still to be discovered?

Who knows? We have not unearthed all archeological artifacts, much more analyzed everything we’ve got, have we? Don’t we have records of city-wide fires? We have several historical accounts of massive public book-burning events, these could have included writing of those accounts.

True or not, we still have to believe that Lazarus and the sick child were resurrected by Christ himself. That the old Covenant/Testament books predictions are true regarding the moments about Christ’s death.

I don’t think we can say that a person seeing a dead relative never happened before. That single person might not tell anyone for fear of being thought deluded (as now) or might have just written their experience to a relative or friend or only told those close to them. There may have been a lot of rumors, and scoffers (as now) and the passage in Scripture attributed to those who were followers of Jesus reporting their experiences. People outside of the few who followed Jesus would consider them a foolish cult (as now.)

Think in terms of no electricity, no news shows, no internet to post things on and look them up. But, there are plenty of reports of spirits and apparitions throughout previous history. And, they are almost always single source. As this was.

I could think of two things… a) these did not leave the cemetery en masse–since Scriptures state that Jesus is the First Resurrected, these saints had to down play their resurrection from the dead and leave the cemetery only after Jesus’ resurrection and reentering the Holy City; b) the fact that these rose from the dead may not be a positive factor for those who wanted Christ to be done and over with… silencing any and all claims to Jesus’ Divinity was a task that the religious elite had began well before His Crucifixion… remember the man healed on Sabbath–when he insisted on his claim that Jesus healed him the religious did not seek to publicize the event; instead they sought his parents so that they may silence the man!
