May I go to Confession before finishing my last penance?

I have a question concerning Confession. I am given a penance that is to last a whole week and I decide to go to confession three days later to confess venial sins. Is it wrong for me to do this.

Dear CM,

You are free to go to Confession when you want to. However, the Church frowns on priests giving lengthy penances.
