Hello,
I have a situation where I need some guidance. My parish offers Eucharist Adoration on Tuesdays from 9 AM until 6 AM Wednesday morning. My hour is from 7 to 8 PM. When I arrived last night for my hour, I arrived to an empty monstrance on the altar. I called the parishioner in charge of Eucharistic Adoration and left her a voice mail. I walked over to the rectory and the young person working there told me that the Blessed Sacrament was put away in the Tabernacle (which is off to the side of the church) because no one had showed for the 6 PM hour. None of the priests were home to take it out. I went back into the church and prayed before the Tabernacle. However, I was disappointed because I really wanted to see exposition. The people who showed up for the 8 PM hour were equally surprised and disappointed. When I got home I e-mailed our parish priests to let them know what had happened. Their reply was that a key should have been left in the Tabernacle door (which it was not) and then I could have taken the Blessed Sacrament out and placed it in the monstrance. My question is can I do that? I thought that only a priest, deacon, or lay eucharistic minister could do that? The associate pastor said “Well, if you can touch the Blessed Sacrament at Communion, it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to handle it in its glass case and place it in the monstrance.” I’m confused. Please help.
Thank you!
