May I sponsor an "in vitro" baby in baptism?

I appreciated Fr Serpa’s answer to YANAC about in vitro fertilization. I am in complete agreement with the Church that this procedure is morally wrong, but now I am in the awkward position of being asked to be the Godmother of an in vitro baby in Baptism. Although I am morally opposed to the procedure, I’m certainly not opposed to babies or to Baptism. The baby is due soon and I don’t know what to tell the mother (who is Catholic!).

Does the Church have a position on this or is it just a personal decision? Either way, I will abide by your answer and pass it on to the baby’s mother.

Hi,

The Church does not with-hold Baptism from in vitro children any more than it does for children born out of wedlock. Becoming the child’s godparent would be a very good thing to do.
