May is almost half over. Has your parish had a May crowning?

Yes - our school has had the same type May crowning since the school began in 1904. The teachers and students vote on an 8th grade May queen - supposed to vote for someone who most reflects Mother Mary, and then the K and 1st grade teachers choose a boy and a girl from each class as the queen’s “court” who they feel are deserving of the honor, and after May’s first Friday Mass, which was May 1st this year, we have the May crowning. I always try to go to it - last year and this year I had kids chosen!

We had a crowning on 3 May. It was cute. The first-graders brought out the flower-crown, and one of them put it on this lovely blue-mantled statue of Our Lady. The rest of the first-graders put flowers in a vase at Our Lady’s feet. It was a lot of fun. One of the first-graders was mine this year.

My church (the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge) crowned a May King and May Queen as part of a Beltane ritual last week.

Hint: Vatican II did not forbid them.

To my knowledge, my parish hasn’t had one in 40 years.

Yes, we have.

In fact, we are doing the May crowning every Sunday in May.

My parish has never done at least for the time i’ve attended (7 years)
May isn’t really emphasized as Mary’s month the most we do is pray the rosary. But i’ve come to learn that that is better than many other parishes.

sometimes i go to downtown to a more traditional parish and they always have mary crowned in May…

Yes, my parish tradition is that 1st Communion is on the first Sunday in May, the May crowning is on the 2nd Sunday of May (also being Mother’s Day), and the 1st Communion children dress in their 1st Communion clothes for this event as well. (Parish tradition also has them returning in 1st Communion clothes for the 40 Hours in June.)

My parish whooped your parishes We had an anticipatory crowning! School Mass is on Thursdays, so on the last day of April, the school children did the crowning.

There is also a large statue in the school proper and a small one in the garden, and both have crowns now, but I don’t know when exactly they were done.

Ours does, apparently (since I saw Mary crowned when I went to Mass today), but I don’t know why they do it.
