May we contracept for health reasons?

Are their any exception to the non-use of contraception for sex between 2 married Catholic partners if the wife has a history of manic depression, and alcohalism and poor health.

I am 55 and she is 58. She has always relied on doctor’s advice because of her manic depression and alcoholism. Her doctors have said it is dangerous to her health if she tried to have a baby. She is severely emotionally afraid to take the chance of having a baby to the point of having panic attacks. We have not had sex for over 3 years because I do not want to use contraception. I believe it has ruined our relationship and intimacy.

I have asked a priest about this who said he thought because of her health, we could use contraception. However, I am concerned that I am only taking the easy way out and God may condem me.Please answer your thoughts.

Hi,

That priest did not have the right to counter the teaching of the Church regarding birth control. The fact that you ask the question here testifies to the fact that you have doubts about his advice. Couples are not allowed to curb the vows made at the altar which what contracepting does. I would think that menopause should bring you relief relatively soon. You can be sure that the Lord has not over-looked the sacrificial way you have striven to obey Him. You both are in our prayers.
