I was told by someone on Sunday that after 3 pm on Good Friday, that Lent is over and you can break your fasting, eat what you want, and basically begin partying. Specifically, I was speaking to this person about having a big family get together where everyone feasts and drinks etc, which I said was improper, but this person said was ok, as long as it was after 3 pm. I have checked the CCC and can’t find the answer I am looking for! HELP!

Dear friend,

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence ALL DAY! Lent ends when the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper begins on Holy Thursday. At this time the Holy Triduum, the year’s shortest liturgical season (three days) begins. It too is penitential in character until midnight on Holy Saturday. With the beginning of Easter Sunday, penance is over-taken by Alleluias. It is at this time that parties and family feasts are appropriate—not before!
