Maybe you have any ideas?

Okay, I’ve known for a couple days now. A friend’s parents are going to lose their home if they can’t get a certain amount of money together in just a couple of days now. They’ve run out of ideas on who to ask, and most of them haven’t pulled through. Do you guys have any ideas where they could get it? It would be so good if they can keep their home, they have so many memories in that house, it would be a shame if they lost it. 😦

Frequently Catholic agencies/social services in large metro areas will have crisis assistance for helping to pay bills, work with credit counseling and even refer to legal advisors in cases where the loss of a residence is imminent. I would check that route and see if you can’t find some emergency help to stabilize this situation so the house isn’t lost.

Do we dare ask why they need a “certain” amount of money right away to keep their house? Are they behind on mortgage payments?
Perhaps after getting help to keep the house they should look into the reason they “nearly” lost their house and try to resolve the situation so it does not occur again:)

They need at least $2500. They would be losing their house because his mom was told that she didn’t have to pay so much, so she didn’t, and found out that she was supposed to be paying… Still kind of confusing me, but it’s not because they’re using the money for something else.

We don’t live in a big city, and the church is already having money problems of their own… 😦

Have them sell some possessions to make up for the money–at least they will still have a home, and when they get back on their feet they can slowly regain their material possessions. Are they employed? Perhaps a kind boss could give them a loan for part of the money?

They’re already selling their possessions. I have a feeling though that losing their home is immenent. The are employed, and they’ve asked their bosses. My friend has yet to ask his boss, but I told him to do that today, so hopefully the boss will be as kind to help out. Thanks you guys. I guess we just have to pray, and darn hard!

Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul…see if they have any resources that can help.

Something very similar happened to friends of mine. My very first suggestion would be for your friend’s parents to contact a foreclosure lawyer IMMEDIATELY. If the foreclosure has not been served yet, there may still be time to work out a solution. If the foreclosure has already been served, there is not much that can be done. I would contact an attorney before attempting to do anything else. My friends ended up losing their home because the focused soley on getting the money, and not on averting the foreclosure. They got the money in time, but because of legalities and technicalities, it was not received by the mortgage holder before the deadline, and they lost their home anyway.
My mother also was in a similar situation several years ago. Her first action was to attempt to avert the foreclosure by getting an attorney involved. She ended up saving her home, plus she had the added benefit of not having to pay what the mortgage company said she owed (she never actually owed anything-- it turned out the company was acting illegally with the customers’ payments-- but that’s another story). My point is, had she not contacted an attorney immediately, she would have lost her home. I cannot stress enough-- have the parents contact a foreclosure attorney NOW.

You know, I think part of it is the ostrich syndrome-- if I ignore it long enough, maybe it will go away. I know that with my friends, that was a big part of their problem. They knew they were behind, but did not do what needed to be done until just before they got the notice to evacuate (which was shortly after the notice that the mortgage company was going to begin foreclosure procedings). They were in contact with the mortgage company about a payment plan before the notice to foreclose was issued, and they were trying to raise the money, but the company decided to foreclose anyway. All the attorneys and agencies they spoke with after the eviction notice was posted on their door said that if they had contacted a foreclosure attorney when they first knew it was a possibility, they would most likely have been able to save their home.

In my mother’s case, she had all her records, and she knew that she did not owe anything. It turned out that the mortgage company’s unethical bookkeeping practices made it look like she was behind on property taxes, and the county was going to force a foreclosure. The fact that she knew, and could prove, otherwise is one of the reasons she went to an attorney in the first place. The attorney took her pro-bono, and the mortgage company admitted they “made a mistake” in the posting dates and paid to the county the taxes that my mother had already paid. The attorney did tell her that she likely would have lost the house anyway if she had not taken swift legal action. Even if it turned out that my mother was right, the house would have been foreclosed upon.

tell them to look into a reverse mortgage, basically the mortgage company would pay them money which they could turn around to pay existing bills. The catch is, in the end they will lose the house when they both die. Call your local christian radio stations to find out what mortgage compaines advertise on them.

Call the local TV stations, newspapers - they may run a human interest story…
