Meaning of "ex caritate"

I have seen the expression “… offer a Mass ex caritate for the repose of his soul …”. Can anyone please tell me what ex caritate means?

From love? From kindly benificence? Out of Christian love and charity?

Something like that.

Et hoc modo amicitia caritatis se extendit etiam ad inimicos, quos digimus ex caritate in ordine ad Deum, ad quem principahter habetur amicitia caritatis.

Love and charity, as in “steadfast love” in Bible translations, and as in “Christian charity” as being nearly synonymous with the “steadfast love” / “mercy” / “agape”, etc.

I thought it might be but just wanted to check in case caritate was a faux ami. I suspect from the context in which I saw it, it most likely best translates in to English as “out of charity”. With ‘charity’ in this sense meaning love or kindness.
