Meaning of John 15:12--13

John 15:12-13
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

How and when do we love our friends as Jesus did?
Is Jesus saying here we should take risks in life? What exactly does “lay down his life” mean here in Catholic Tradition? Does it mean to die, or simply to risk death? Do we lay down our lives for our friends when we drive to work everyday to earn money for alms to the Catholic Church, or do we have to be a martyr and die to have great love like Jesus did?

I don’t have much to offer here, but to say that if we concentrate on the “Love” without bounds aspect the other will follow - the willingness to give one’s life for others - to others.
This of course means a properly ordered Love. One ordered to God and to the highest good of our neighbor whom we are to Love as we Love ourselves…
