We as human being give to much attention to our feeling most importantly to love. Needless to say that feelings are the main source which harmonize basic needs without that life was not possible yet they are empty. Most people however have busy lives not even noticing the emptiness in their lives. So what is left is what is meaning and what is the role of it in our lives. The meaning of meaning is tricky but to me meaning is opposite of empty or purposeful. The role of meaning in our lives could be very vast, it could be used as a principle for ethic, social justice, etc.

Is there a question here?

If man lived in a vacuum, totally alone, there really would be no meaning to life. The fact that man is a societal and communal animal, begins the search for meaning in life. Given that, the meaning of life would probably have a multitude of dimensions.

🤷

Yes, we really can become “teleological biscuits”, if we aren’t too half-baked in the way we go about our lives!

We are all loved by God first. Jesus died for each and everyone of us, that must mean Jesus loves us as he loves himself. The second greatest commandment.

The greatest commandment is to love an invisible God that we do not know. But in Mathew 25, Jesus tells us that loving those most in need, is how we directly love God.

Mathew 25
The sheep and the goats

31 ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 ‘Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was ill and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

37 ‘Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you ill or in prison and go to visit you?”

40 ‘The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Love is the result of specific chemical process in the brain. Yes, it is important but it is no the basic. Meaning is the basic which without it everything is empty.

  1. Love is not a feeling or a chemical process.
Before you reflexively object, yes, love can contain feelings and chemicals, but that’s not what it is.
The Christian conception of love is that it is a choice, a free act of the will toward the good of another for no other reason than the other’s good.
When feelings are idolized in place of love, emptiness can only be the result, because feelings are fleeting and cannot fully satisfy.
Love endures and gives meaning, purpose, identity, being.

Even the above mentioned definition of love does not give a meaning to life.

What you defined as love cannot give meaning and purpose.

Yes, love is what gives life meaning.

You came from somewhere, right? Did you create yourself? Why are you here? What is creation?
All those questions are ultimately answered by “love”.

Love pours itself out for others. Creation is an outpouring of love then. Creation spends itself to make others. (remember: the Christian definition of love is “to will the good of another for the sake of the other”)
You exist because something outside yourself willed you to exist. (the alternative is absurd…you created yourself?)

Practical evidence:
Have you ever been with a dying person? Note the questions that come about at that time. People are not preoccupied with material things, they want to know they are loved and loved others well. That is what gives life meaning and purpose and identity.

Yes, love is what gives life meaning.
No. that is meaning which give life meaning.
You came from somewhere, right?
Yes. From my parents and what they nourished.
Did you create yourself?
No.
Why are you here?
There could be no reason for why we are here.
What is creation?
The existence is default. I have a thread on that. I can share it if you wish.
