Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Did Jesus mean that somehow ‘righteousness’ -something intangible, being neither liquid or solid, could be consumed, that is; eaten or drunken ? or poured into one’s body?

**I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. **

Did Jesus mean he was actually ‘bread’ as in something tangible ? Was he implying that one could actually eat his physical body or drink it, or did he actually mean something MUCH more profound ?

Since, as you say, righteousness is intangible, a literal interpretation is not possible. Jesus was speaking figuratively.

Since Jesus has both tangible (flesh and blood) and intangible (teachings) aspects, Jesus was speaking either literally or figuratively or he was speaking both literally and figuratively.

Catholics believe that Jesus was speaking both literally and figuratively.

Yeah, when Jesus makes the “**I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” statement, he is beginning a teaching that will be further defined later. when he says, “This is my body” while holding the bread.

The Sacrificial tones of the phrase “offer this up as a memorial sacrifice to me” really hammer it home.

Besides, if Jesus was just offering up bread and wine, then he was doing nothing that hadn’t been done already by our good Melchizedek.

If you want something to eat and drink. God by His peradventure has given two.
  1. Come to Christ - repentance from dead works
  2. Put your faith in what He did - faith towards God.
Romans 10:9,10

The righteousness of God, is imputed, not imparted.

When Jesus says, ‘I AM THAT BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN.’ He did not mean that one should eat him, like that. That is silly. The only eating we do is when we come to Him trusting in what He did. Finis.

Love,
Pophead.

:rotfl: It would be funny, if it wasn’t so typical. You’re denying what the Bible says and putting your own interpretation on it, because you find something silly?
It’s like saying that Trinity doesn’t exist, because it’s silly to imagine that 3=1.
Besides, I think it was silly for Jesus to tell people to eat His Body, when He actually meant the opposite.

Just a thought

The Hebrew word Bethlehem means "house of bread"

His mother placed Him in a manger which means "to chew or to eat"

His mother placed Him in something you put food in.

The miracle of the loafs and the fish= God being able to feed His people without ever running out.

Jesus talked about the manna that God sent from heaven for the people of Israel and how they ate of it and died.

Then He talks about Himself and tells us that He is the true bread of life.

John 6
54"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

In the Ark of the Covenant is the Stone tablets (Ten Commandments) the manna that God sent from heaven and the Rod of Aaron.

In the New Ark of the Covenant(Mary) is the Word that became flesh, the Bread of Life that came from heaven, our King Jesus.

Jesus said "eat the flesh of the Son of Man "
Not eat the flesh and understand.
(CS Lewis I think)

Many of His disciples left Him. WHY? If it was only symbolism WHY did they leave? Why?

In the KJV
John 6
60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, **This is an hard saying; who can hear it? **

61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

How can it offend them if Jesus is speaking symbolically? How?

Yes, it sounds silly in human terms. That’s why Jesus repeated this teaching several times in language that could leave no doubt he was indeed saying that we must eat his flesh and drink his blood to have life. It is a hard saying for men of weak faith and because of it many turned their backs on Jesus and many continue to do so. But for those who trust the Word of God above human conjecture it is life.

This is actually a rather interesting point. You see Jesus gave them the Vodka straight…and…guess what…they did not get it, so he just kept on adding water, eventually what they got was so watered own that if anyone were to actually think that it was actually Vodka, they would be really stupid. Anyone could tell it’s not Vodka’ and walk off.

Pophead laughs.😃

Additional.

The really stupid part, is people (generally very religious, like Cain) make up a religion about it, and the biggest joke is that people actually buy into it and say, “Yeah, man this water is actually Vodka”. Oh gimme a break.

No? Then what is 2 Cor. 3:18 referring to, when it says:

“All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the Glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord Who is the Spirit.”

Likewise, 2 Cor. 5:17 says:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

Likewise, Gal 6:15 says:

“Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.”

Being “transformed” into a “new creation” is not something that is imputed, but something that is very real and truly imparted to the sinner, whose old sinful nature is replaced with a new nature in Jesus Christ; otherwise, you call God a liar.
When Jesus says, ‘I AM THAT BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN.’ He did not mean that one should eat him, like that. That is silly. The only eating we do is when we come to Him trusting in what He did. Finis.
🙂 Oh? Then why did Jesus, in John 6:55 say “My Flesh is true food and my Blood is true drink”? Was Jesus wrong or lying? Likewise, why does Paul say what he says in 1 Corinthians 10:16-22:

“The Cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the Blood of Christ? The Bread that we break, is it not a participation in Body of Christ? …Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? So, what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything? No, I mean that what they (the pagans) sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, not to God, and I do not what you to become participants with demons. You cannot drink of the Cup of the Lord and also of the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the Table of the Lord and also of the table of demons. Or are we provoking the Lord to jealous anger?”

You are correct that when, in John 6:35-41, Jesus says “I Am the Bread come down from Heaven,” He is referring to His own Personhood. But, later in John 6, He elaborates on this teaching and directly connects Himself with the reception of the Holy Eucharist, which is His own Real Presence - His Incarnate Personhood made present in our midst. Your problem is that you do not recognize the fact that our Covenant with Jesus Christ is not merely a spiritual Covenant. Rather, it is both a spiritual Covenant AND an Incarnational, Flesh-and-Blood Covenant - a one-Flesh union with Christ (see Eph. 5:25-32). Evangelical Protestantism is woefully lacking in this dimension of the Christian Faith. The Church is the Body of Christ - that which is in one-Flesh union with Him, and which will rise again PHYSICALLY (not merely spiritually) on the Last Day. Thus, union with Christ is not merely a matter of assent or belief. Rather, it is a matter of remaining in a one-Flesh Covenant with Him; and this is what He gave the Church the Eucharist for: “He who eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood REMAINS in me and I in Him” - John 6:56.

You think that you are wise and sophisticated, but you are actually quite blind and cannot see the bigger truth, i.e., you do not properly understand what Catholics believe and teach about the Eucharist. Jesus’ real Presence in the Eucharist is metaphysical, not physical. The physical elements of the Eucharist are bread and wine. We perceive them as bread and wine, since that’s all our senses are able to see and perceive. We do not have to “pretend” that they are Jesus in a physical sense; since, in a physical sense, they are bread and wine. But, we know by faith that their metaphysical nature has changed and that this nature is the Real and Personal Presence of the risen Jesus Christ - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

And how do we know this? Why do we believe this? Because Jesus says so. He says: “This IS my Body” and “This IS the Cup of my Blood.” Jesus is God. When God declares something to be so, then it MUST BE the thing that He declares it to be - just as when God says “Let there be light,” and there IS light! Jesus gave this very same authority to His Church. Thus, through His Church, He continues to give Himself to us in a true and metaphysical way. I don’t know about you, but the Jesus Who I know does not give people mere symbols or make up nice human rituals for us to follow. Rather, the Jesus Who I know gives us His very Self and nothing less. This is why Paul says what He says about the Eucharist above in 1 Corinth 10:16-22.

The Eucharist is in the form of bread and wine because Jesus WANTS US to see and perceive mere bread and wine. His message here is: ‘I Am nourishment to you’ - the thing which you need to live. But, we know by faith that what we receive in the Eucharist is not bread and wine. Rather, it is Christ Himself hidden under the physical forms of bread and wine. This is what Jesus gave us as the sign and Sacrament of His one-Flesh Covenant, and this is what the early Church consistently and universally believed.

No one denied it or claimed that the Eucharist is just a symbol until the heretic Berengarius (a French Catholic priest) in the 11th Century, and even he eventually recanted and returned to the Apostolic belief of the Church. Yet his heresy lived on in university circles until the Protestant reformation, and it was embraced by Zwingli, from whom you get it today. The other reformers, however, opposed Zwingli on this. Luther and Calvin both maintained that the Eucharist is more than just a symbol, and Luther continued to maintain (similar to the Catholic Church) that it is the Real and Incarnational Presence of Jesus. So, even a great many of your fellow Protestants do not agree with you.

In short, you simply do not know what you are talking about, and you foolishly call people “stupid” without realizing the full scope of the issue and the dynamics involved. This is the mark of an immature person. You need to grow up and to mature in your Christian Faith, to say nothing of your grasp of Scripture.

I am ? 🤷

Some people make a religion out of watered down truth, I prefer the 100% proof. Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

When one obeys the first words of Jesus, then you have ‘bread of life’. It is simple, ‘go to Jesus’, and, ‘believe on Him’. Then you will be eating Him, and drinking Him. The Lord’s Supper is just and ordinance, and nothing more. Making an ordinance do what it cannot, is the real foolishness in hearts who prefer the watered down truth, like watered down Vodka, it just does not have the same KICK !!!

Well, Pophead, if you’re nothing else, you certainly are enjoyable.

What sacrifices are priests instructed to offer up when they are offering up what Jesus instructed them to?

It’s funny how Catholics are often accused of empty rituals, saying that Jesus condemned empty rituals, and then you turn around and we are accused of being instructed to perform these empty rituals by Jesus Himself.

I’m dealing on another thread where we HAVE to perform Baptisms by Jesus’ command, even though Baptism does nothing for us.

Now, I’m wondering if this instruction, “Offer this up, as a memorial sacrifice to me” is simply symbolism for “Believe in me”.

Clearly, being a “new creation”, as St. Paul says, does not apply to our form, our physical properties, since we don’t look any different and the world does not see any obvious physical change in a person when he or she becomes a believer in Christ. However, according to the words of Scripture, we know that a metaphysical change HAS taken place - that the former sinner has been re-created in the image and likeness of Jesus, and is a new creation and is thus able - by the grace of Christ - to live according to that Image, especially when fed by Christ Himself with His Body and His Blood as He commanded.

You, as with all Protestants follow a “rationalistic” man-made, and watered-down view of the Covenant, therefore your communion pales in comparison to what Christ left us as HIS memorial. You, in particular, did not suprise me, since you think that justification itself is just imputed (i.e., no literal transubstantiation of the Christian believer into a “new creation”), so why should you think that the Eucharist is anything but a symbol? At least you are consistent in your error.

43 Jesus answered them, "Do not murmur among yourselves. 44* No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45* It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Every one who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46* Not that any one has seen the Father except him who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." 59 This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Caperna-um. 60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61* But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62* Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? 63* It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64* But there are some of you that do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. 65* And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

RSV-CE geocities.com/sacra_scriptura/eng_bible_index.html

After the people complained saying “how can he give us his flesh to eat”, Jesus didn’t not backtrack, in fact He stated at least four times that “His flesh” is more than symbolic.
