“Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?” -1 Corinthians 3:1-3

" We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this ageunderstood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”
the things God has prepared for those who love him—
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit." 1 Corinthians 2:6-10

"Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” John 16:29-30

In each of these passages, the scripture talks about deep things and greater wisdom of God. Often is only fit for the wise and those mature in faith and understanding. But what is that deep knowledge? Christians claim to have it, yet seem to only talk of milk and simple things. Is the meat really John 3:16? But isnt that the milk too? Is there really any depth or it is just something we say exists but never explore?

The Catholic traditon has a long and rich traditon of exploring deeper ways to follow Christ and put on His nature. The Reformation threw out most of those and is left with a superficial version. But where are those deeper, contemplative practices in scripture? It’s seems everything is geared towards the least intellegent, least spirtual person in the room.

It seems to me that part of the deeper experience of God is the desire to live the teachings Jesus gave us and the realization and awareness that living this way and experiencing God more directly in our lives in seemingly simple moments is to truly live. The “milk” give people who are living in and of the world some basic principles that seem counterintuitive, gets their attention, and invites them to go deeper in the spiritual life and they begin to practice a new way of living. But they need to at least be willing to try first. If we approach someone and the first thing we say is, “When you meet God, everything will change even though nothing will change” they’re unlikely to inquire further.

If you contemplate Scripture, you will find a inexhaustible source of meaning that you hardly imagined existed.
