May I use chicken bullion cubes in a recipe when cooking a meal on Friday? Cubes that dissolve in water to essentially make a chicken broth of sort.

Yes. There is actally more chicken in the dust you breathe than in those things. Since they dissolve completely, the finished dish contains no solid meat products.

Are you in the USA? We are only required to abstain on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.

Some people decide to abstain every Friday, outside of lent, what you eat or don’t eat is a personal decision.

The rule of Lenten abstinence from meat includes all flesh and organs from mammals and fowl. This also includes soups and gravies made from them. Current practice in the Church is guided by the document “Paenitemini,” given in 1966 by Pope Paul VI. In previous documents the question of soups and gravies was spoken of specifically. In “Paenitemini” the question is not specifically included. That has led to some discussion of the issue in Catholic circles.

My Bishop has interpreted the practice to include abstaining from soups and gravies made from meat on Lenten abstinence days.

As I said, individual Bishops may interpret the law in a different way.

Can you point me to the official document that takes the decision out of the hands of the local Bishop?

Some Bishops choose to lighten or lift Lenten Meat rules for all but Ash Wed and Good Friday, some on specific days (for example, when the Feast day falls on a Lenten Friday).

Maybe read the document:

I am not saying that every Bishop disallows gravies or soups made from meat, however, some do. It is best to check your own Bishop’s teachings. I have checked with mine, and we are not permitted soups made from meat or gravies made from meat.

I said nothing about “taking the decision out of the hands of the local Bishop”. Those are your words.

I did say that the bishops came up with rules that apply for the whole US, and not individual dioceses. This is their joint statement:

And I quoted the joint rules here:

I don’t think that is necessary. But neither is it wrong to link to the USCCB rules.

USCCB doc is a pastoral statement, it is guidelines, not rubrics.
