What is the rule of meat on Fridays when Thanksgivings and Christmas fall on a Friday?

For able Catholics we only fast and abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. So Thanksgiving and Christmas we can eat all of the meat we like.

Um, Thanksgiving (in the U.S. which is a secular, not a religious, feast) is always on a Thursday. Apparently those Catholics who do abstain on all Fridays have received a dispensation from the bishops (or did at one time) that permitted them to eat the turkey’leftovers’ on Friday. But they didn’t have to.

Christmas (like any Sunday) is never a fast or abstinence day, whether it falls on a Friday or not.

The Catholics in the U.S. received an indult in the 1960s that released them from the NORM (the universal practice) of not eating meat on ANY Friday (Lent or not). Many of us still choose to observe the non-Lenten Fridays as abstinence and/or fast days as well. It’s easier to remember that all Fridays are penitential days that way. I figure that if the universal Church is observing abstinence on all the Fridays of the year, I can too, because I hate, loathe and detest fish so for me it is truly a penance. I’m pretty sure if I loved fish or were a vegetarian that I would try to do a different penance on both Lenten and non-Lenten Fridays.

Thanks everyone for the info. I really do know that Thanksgiving is on Thursday, but Friday was stuck in my head and just thinking of Holidays in general when they fall on Fridays. 😊
Thanks again
