My grandaughter is in a play for her High School. It is a public school. They will be having dinner during the show. The only thing on the menu is chicken. Do you think it would be allright to eat it? or…Should I just eat Bread, salad, etc.? We have to pay for these dinners also…it is not free…(not that money is the issue)

I would say just eat the bread/salad/etc. Why risk grave sin for just one lousy meal? 😉

Tell them you’re Catholic (or that you’re just “not eating meat”) and ask for extra side dishes instead.

It seems like any meal I go to has a vegetarian option. Is there one for this dinner?

How old is your granddaughter, firstly - I think under 14s don’t have to abstain.

Otherwise - you have every right to ask for a vegetarian alternative, or else ask for your money back if there’s no real alternative to chicken, and take her somewhere where she can eat. In this day and age it’s thoughtless not to cater for vegetarians.

Eat before you go so you won’t be hungry. Then, eat the non-meat items at the dinner. You should also write to the school and express your dismay that they do not offer a fish option for Catholics during Lent.

Amen to THAT!!

Remember when every school cafeteria had fish sticks on Friday?

This was my thought too.

I noticed you are from South Carolina. I am from Mississippi. It seems that in places where there are few Catholics, people don’t consider that we don’t eat meat on Fridays. That’s one of the things I like about living here in Indiana. There are actually enough Catholics here that people are mindful of us during Lent and provide meatless options. Even the local Chick-fil-a serves tuna salad sandwiches on Fridays. 😃

But yeah, I would inquire about a vegetarian option. It’s really inconsiderate of them to have nothing but chicken…what about the vegetarians? It’s not that uncommon these days. Otherwise I would just eat the bread and salad.

I recently went to an organized dinner type thing and you’d think in Chicago people would remember that there are A LOT of Catholics who don’t eat meat on Friday, especially during lent, but no… it was all meat dishes… hamburgers, sausages, chicken, etc. Thankfully they had a side dish of noodles so I just filled up on those. I didn’t complain figuring maybe that was the point of sacrificing?

I would eat the salad & breadsticks. It’s just one meal.
