While going on a religious website, I found this about a rally held in a Catholic Church yesterday. There were links to various news sites and videos. What I found interesting in one of them was a woman on the outside of the church displaying a sign that refered to the 501 C-3 tax exempt status of certain organizations like churches and how they must run in order to be tax exempt. The woman sign said that the 501 C-3 tax exempt status of the church should be taken away.

She might have a point. The church was not being used in a religious manner but in a “for profit for immigrants” manner. A case could be made that “one hand washes the other” in this instance. Therefore a profit would be made and not in a religious context. Should this be investigated?

The links are listed below. The first one will show the woman’s sign but it only appears for a second.

No, she doesn’t have a point. She is ignorant of the law.

No. It seems you do not have a good grasp on the law either. I encourage you to study what it means to be exempt from federal taxes under the IRS code and what it does not mean.

Nothing you linked to violates the law in any way. The Church has a right and duty to speak out on moral issues, and is within its rights to lobby and be politically active. Whether one agrees with the particular issue and position Cardinal George has taken, it is no way violates the law.
