My Godson who just turned 19 is a self declared athiest. Obviously, I’ve not done my job well. I was thinking of getting him the *Exorcist tells his Story * on audio. I thought it might shake him up a little. Good idea?

I would also like any other suggestions for resources. Here’s the big problem–he has dyslexia and does not read well. So, any books would have to be available on audio.

Thanks!

Throwing books and things at people never works. Eventually he’ll just start telling you lies about it to get you to leave him alone. First step is to understand why he thinks the way he does. If you don’t care why he thinks the way he does (I’m not saying you necessarily don’t, but many people in your situation do not) then you should really leave the situation to someone else. I couldn’t suggest someone off-hand. Are his parents still around, or perhaps another relative?

Of course, if you feel you can listen and honestly consider his viewpoint outside of a “You’re wrong, I’m right” light, then I encourage you to attempt to do so. Even if you don’t change him (he’s 19, good luck with that 😃 ) it’s posible for you both to learn something from it.

Very good advice. I think you’ll never know how to reach him until you know where he’s coming from. I would approach the subject in a very non-threatening way.

And pray pray pray for him. People change so much from 19 until further into adulthood.

Read Patrick Madrid’s Search and Rescue for advice on evangelizing relatives and friends. You did your job just fine, a chld or godchild who leaves the Church is not your fault necessarily, they are free to choose, just as God’s children were in the garden of Eden.

Pray, and be there for answers. My husband wasn’t very religous when I married him, although he was rasied Catholic. He left the Church before he was confirmed. I just stayed calm (for the most part) and answered any questions he had. And, corrected him when needed. But, most of all I prayed. My husband is going to be confirmed in May. He is more knowledgable on some things than I am now. God will find his way into your Godson’s heart. Just be there for both of them.
