Would taking drugs that affect the chemicals in your brain be ok? I’m on an anti anxiety and a bi polar drug. For anger not because im bipolar. I’m curious because what did people do before there was anything? I’m just not sure,or should i try to deal with the problems on my own?

Is taking prescription medicine for psychiatric issues morally acceptable?

Yes, it is.

What did people do before psychotropic meds?

They suffered horribly. Modern medicine has been a literal Godsend.

Before? People got into fights, became alcoholics, or were institutionalized.

Follow your doctor’s advice. If necessary, medication can be changed. Also, don’t forget to regularly see your psychologist.

Before I retired I worked at a phsych.hospital…stay on your meds…continue to see your MD or Psychiatrist.

I actually see a neurologist, I’ve suffered a traumatic brain injury. Problem is I overthink everything and sometimes make the wrong decisions. I want to be a good father and husband, I know the end goal is heaven. I just didn’t know if it was morally acceptable to take meds like I’m on. Like can someone get into heaven if their mind is altered? Or what I thought was in order to really be a good person you wouldn’t need help like drugs. Too many people think drugs are the answer for everything, especially doctors. Has anyone been on meds before and stopped? Or is anyone on meds currently? I’m on lamotrigine and buspirone if anyone knows what they are. Thank you for all your responses.

It is perfectly acceptable to take your medicine. Taking medicine that has some influence on brain function for therapeutic purposes is a morally good action because it’s tending towards optimizing your state of health.

An injured brain needs medical interventions just as a broken bone does. Don’t feel bad about taking medicine for it. It’s very helpful for many people, but you have to consult with your doctor to make the final decision.

I am somewhat against it if one has recovered… but I’d agree with most of the others here. And doctors have the Hippocratic oath. So the thing is. Nothing is permanent. These things can change. Work on your spiritual life. Sometimes people are overmedicated. Sometimes they no longer need it. Sometimes they need to take it the rest of their lives. Sometimes and I mean very rarely they need an exorcist. Stay away from alcohol and drugs too.

I have been on meds and stopped, but I would advise that it was done under medical care and not simply by stopping them. Most doctors really don’t want you on meds your whole life if you don’t have to be.

In my case I would say the meds actually let me see what normal life should look like, at a time when I was too caught in emotional pain to see that for myself. I expect it would rather have been sinful to refuse the medicine that let me get to a place where I could live a life of supporting myself and being able to assist others.

Therapist have told me with my injuries people need to be on meds their whole life. I stopped taking them for a week because I thought it gave me memory problems. I was all of a sudden raising my voice to my almost 3 year old which I never do. I think I will need to be on these my whole life, which makes me very sad.

Some people are in a wheel chair their whole life. I’d rather be the one taking the meds their whole life.

I take a mood stabilizer and may likely always take it my whole life. I’m not so much sad about it. I’m just glad it works pretty well! 🙂

Don’t sweat it. Use your brain to make your own decisions with the help of your doctor.

Needing to be on meds doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be on those meds, either. You may consider asking whether a different medication would do.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not saying this is or isn’t the case, just that it’s something to ask your doctor about.

You’re getting close by your question to soliciting medical advice from posters and that is not allowed on CAF. It will get your thread removed or locked.

Okay I just wanted to know it would be morally permissible to take them for an extended period of time. I wasn’t asking about the medical side.

That is not always true. We do recover. But it is still prudent to be obedient to your doctor… If you have dread in your gut or conscience and feel led astray seek a different professional opinion.

Please stay on your meds and follow your doctor’s orders. As others have said taking medication is perfectly fine.

Brenden, this is a cross that you have to bear, at least for now, maybe for the rest of your life. Please use it to your advantage. I think being sad that things aren’t the way they were before is a normal thing, however, you can turn this cross into a blessing. God always wants to turn bad things into good, evil into blessings. So pray. Ask Him him to help you. Let him know that you want to offer it up and ask Him to help you to do that. He will. I’m not saying it will be easy, but it can be a blessing if you are willing. Treasure in heaven is always better than anything we have or can gain here but many times there are consolations here as well.

God Bless you, and I’ll pray for you.

Your question is fine, but it may lead posters to wish to give you medical advice.

What did people do before psychotropic meds?
Yes, God created healers such as physicians and research scientists to use their skill and talents to assist in finding better ways to help those suffering with various ailments.

Before some of the drugs were developed, many people were institutionalized.

You should not to try to deal with problems on your own if they are serious issues affecting your life. Taking an anti-anxiety or bipolar drug is no different than a diabetic taking medication or insulin to control blood sugar.

If after reading through this thread you still feel worried or concerned about taking meds please talk to your priest. God bless.
