Hi im an roman Catholic and i have anxiety.
I was told to try meditating but i want to do it in a non Buddhist way. I just want to clear my head and relax.
I read online how to mediate in a catholic way but is just shows way of prayer i mean dont get me wrong i pray but i just want to help my mental state to learn how to relax can someone help by giving me advise on how or what i should do.

Zen meditation is a very good form of meditation to calm your nerves. All you do is focus on your breath. It has been scientifically proven, with brain scans, that its very good for you.

You do not have to be a buddhist to do this. It does not use mantras, prayers or anything that has something to do with eastern gods.

Just look for zen meditation on youtube for instruction videos. If i may give you some advice though; just do it while sitting in a good chair, i have no idea why people always force themselves into difficult postures sitting on the ground

Meditation in a Catholic way is thinking on something.

Do you just want to clear your mind? Just clear it and stop thinking I guess. Like before you go to sleep. If you’re having trouble, stop thinking in words but instead think of a picture.

This is simply my view. I don't know one traditions meditation from another. I practice mindfulness meditation and we can be mindful of anything. The breath, washing dishes, walking, driving a car, etc... etc... We can be mindful as we pray the our father or the rosary. To me it simply means paying attention. We are trying to slow the thought waves of the mind, still the mind chatter.
I agree with finding a chair to sit in or even standing. Be well-take care.

Contemplative Carmelite Prayer that was commenced by Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz), in 1582 and practiced by Carmelite Priests for over 425 years. This form of prayer involves placing oneself obediently, openly and silently before God’s love for about 20 minutes each day. This advanced contemplation and prayer is also typically used by cloistered monks.

Note: Centering Prayer is certainly not to be confused with a New Age "Centering" (a distortion commandeering the same name), that centers around oneself.

Pray in front of an icon, with a candle lit. It is better with prayers you know by heart so you can look at the icon lit by the candle but reading also worked for me. I recommend an oil candle or a wax candle. Real fire not electrical one.
It helped my anxiety, no breathing stuff required. I prefer it at dark with all other lights turned off. You can read prayers from phone or tablet since it is all dark. During daytime you can read from the book. Just the fire candle be lit.
God bless and may He visit and comfort you

Please read and heed jim’s note…there is a big difference between catholic centering prayer and the new age abomination.

I’d suggest a few books:

Fr Jacques Phillipe’s “Time For God”

Fr Dubay’s “The Prayer Primer”
