Now that Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion of the Christ” was an international success what should his next movie be? The “Passion” was released perfectly before Lent and I would love to suggest his next movie be titled “Emmanuel” and be released during Advent and show the Annunciation, birth of Jesus, the adoration of the Magi, the flight into Egypt, the slaughter of the Holy Innocents, and the return to Nazareth. All these scenes would probably be difficult to include in one movie but it’s a thought. What would you suggest be Mel’s next movie? 🙂

I like the biblical idea but what about a “Catholic-Fiction” movie? I enjoyed reading Bud Mcfarlanes three books. Maybe Mel could turn Pierced by a Sword into a movie!

I read articles that quoted Mel Gibson as saying he is considering making a movie on the Maccabees.

For those of you asking, “Mack-A-Who?”, it was revolt against the suppression of Judaism in Palestine in the second century B.C. The revolt of the Maccabees is the story behind Hanukkah, the festival of lights. Kind of like an old testament Brave Heart.

Here is a link from the Jerusalem Post, but if you search for “Mel Gibson” and Maccabee you’ll get a ton of hits.

Report: Gibson planning movie about Maccabee revolt

The Maccabees seem much more Gibson’s and Hollywood’s cup of tea. Action scenes. Heroism. Dastardly Romans.

Imagine if Gibson had to make a Gibson-style film about the Nativity. Can you hear the screenwriters? “Now do you think we could punch this up a bit? Could we develop a storyline about Mary’s jilted ex-boyfriend stalking them on the way to Bethlehem? What this story needs is some more action! How about Joseph is a former gladiator looking to put his past behind him but instead he’s called to fight one more time? It worked in The Quiet Man!”

Eeek.

Actually, I think Gibson should make a film in which he plays a noble and heroic Catholic priest. What a refreshing change that would be! How about the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe? Or he could play the husband in a film of the life of St. Gianna Beretta Molla?

As a side note, besides the Therese film, have there been any good films about saints lately? Actually, I think I’ll start another thread on that.

I heard a rumor that Fr. Benedict Groeschel’s order commissioned Gibson to make a movie on the life of Saint Francis. Anyone else hear this? I wonder how he responded?

I haven’t heard anything of the sort. I was in NYC in April visiting with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and I didn’t hear anything then. But I did see Fr. Groeschel on EWTN the other day and he seems to be doing a lot better! Praise God!

Actually he is currently in production to star in Mad Max Fury Road…he is producing many projects, and may also act in another film called Papparzzi…as far as directing, he isnt doing anything yet.

Mad Max!? I imagined that after The Passion, he’d stop starring in those kinds of films.

i dont think i would want him to do another religious film unless it was as powerful and as hearfelt as “passion.” also, “passion” had a very “work of art” feel to it, which would be hard to re-create

It is unfair for people to now want to “pidgeon hole” him into doing nothing but religious films…Do I want him to make more? Of course! But I also grew to love Gibson thru his cool as heck shoot em up violent flicks as well…and as long as those are well made, I cant wait to see em!

The Passion was in his “gut” for years… he seems to direct a flick every 8 years… he has slowly moved away from excessive violence, but I saw the trailer for Papparazzi, and it looks like a cool as heck REVENGE flick where the scummy Papparazzi get the tables turned and wiped out! Gibson produces and it looks wild!

Ha-Hah! As I was slowly scrolling down the posts, I thought “Nah, if Mel is going to do anything else with a Judeo-christian topic it would have to be the Maccabees. It’s just got Mel Gibson written all over it”. Then I scrolled to the next post and read this!
