I haven’t seen much discussion about this at all so I’m curious on everyone’s views on this…

If you’ve seen the meme of the Pope holding Baby Yoda in place of the host, what do you think? I found it offensive and disrespectful of the Catholic faith but I don’t know if I’m overthinking it or if it really is. To me, replacing what has just become the Body of Christ with the little Yoda seems very disrespectful. What do you all think? I can’t imagine something similar like this being done to any other religion and it being accepted as OK.

I’ve seen it. I actually just told YouTube not to recommend a channel to me that had the image as the preview for a video.

Yea, I didn’t want to post it but if you google it it comes up

It’s just a photo of the pope holding a baby Yoda. If you don’t like it, don’t look at it. I don’t imagine it’s intended to be offensive. It’s been done with other religions:

Jewish baby Yoda:

Episcopalian baby Yoda:

I see what you mean about all this obsession with Yoda. I haven’t thought of Yoda for more than a millisecond in my entire life and wouldn’t have opened a thread about Yoda but for it concerning the Pope. I searched and all these Yoda stories popped up. From the headlines it seems a whole lot of people are sure giving this Yoda a whole lot of attention

Thanks for the responses. I hadn’t seen these other pics. None of these are replacing The Body of Christ though so it’s not really the same thing in my mind.

You’re right, I don’t have to look at it and I don’t, but my boss just sent it out to people in the company and I thought that was disrespectful to Catholicism. He didn’t share the other pics you showed.

I haven’t seen it but just reading about it is infuriating and so disrespectful! No other religions get targeted but for some reason they just think it’s ok to target Christianity as were all about the love thy neighbor etc.
They just have to realize that we will still have to love the sinner but definitely not the sin (their very inappropriate and offensive actions)

If it’s baby Yoda replacing the consecrated Host then it’s blasphemous and insulting.

If it’s just a priest holding baby Yoda in his arms then probably harmless.

Jewish baby Yoda is cute but it matters what the garments mean. If he’s dressed as a rabbi would be to perform an important religious ritual then it may be insulting or even blasphemous. If he’s just wearing a star-of-David scarf, then I’d say harmless.
Of course as I’m not a Jew it’s not my call.

It’s Yoda replacing the consecrated host. It’s
a picture of the Pope with his eyes closed, hands up holding the host during the mass, but with a baby Yoda photoshopped into his hands instead of the host.

Generally, I find that people are wound up tight about this sort of thing.

Comedy is one of those things where it’s best to have as minimal boundaries as possible. If it isn’t hurting anyone, then it’s probably okay. It’s best if we all learned to laugh.

The child.

That is not baby Yoda. This series takes place many, many years after the events of return of the Jedi, in which Yoda is fully grown.

The child appears to be of the same species as Yoda, but he is not baby Yoda.

Umm. The only thing I know about any of this is that it’s not Baby Yoda, it’s The Child. Now what that means, I have no idea, but I’ve been reading that all week on my facebook feed.

It’s only a handful of years after ROTJ, but in essence you are correct.

If one actually sees the meme and knows anything about Baby Yoda, you can tell that the joke is on how obsessed with him the Internet is, not intending to insult Pope Francis or Catholicism. Unfortunately, some folks just cannot read memes.

True, but it’s possible to use otherwise legitimate forms of expression to viciously mock sacred things. Remember “P*** Pope”? There was a very loud chorus of 'but it’s Art!" in defense of that item.

That’s one of those iffy things. I find something like that to be in poor taste and unfunny. I also find that in such cases, it is best to simply ignore them rather than start up a whole consternation. People that like to do such things will continue to do them, and the rest of us will continue to look on with horror.
It is what it is.
