I read “Holy Ghosts” by Catholic writer, Gary Jensen. In this book, he describes how the real-life ghost whisperer (on whom the TV show is loosely-based) helped him rid his home of ghosts.

Since both he and the woman who helped him are Catholic, I was interested to find out more about her, and learned that she had written a memoir called “When Ghosts Speak.” She claims that the TV show is much more dramatized than real life (I’ve never watched it). She does not conjure spirits, she claims she can see them as you and I see live people, without doing anything special or trying. She also does not deal with demons or angels. These are souls of people who have passed away.

My husband says this is sinful and anti-Catholic. I wonder, though, as she isn’t conjuring or dealing with the demonic. Perhaps she was given a gift by God to be shared with others, just as the prophets were?

It’s against the catholic faith to engage in that type of activity. It opens the door to the devil.

And demonic activity. The devil is such a liar and loves fooling people into believing a demon is just a ghost

This is against Church teaching…human souls don’t linger here on Earth after death. Any supernatural activity that people misinterpret as “ghost” activity is most likely demonic…I seriously doubt angels would be doing things to scare people. If angels appear to us they usually appear as human and help us. My dad swears up and down that an angel helped him when he locked his keys in his truck once.

Engaging with ‘ghosts’ is a mistake. In the Church, we understand that one is not supposed to engage in conversation with the devil - one calls upon God to rid one’s domain of said-demon. The same has to be the case here, because Catholics believe that souls of people are in Heaven (as saints), in Purgatory (as holy souls, eventually to be saints in Heaven), and in Hell (the damned), with the other spirits being angels and demons (fallen angels) - the angels are not without good reason for presenting themselves, whilst demons, however, do have an aim in distracting our attention away from good things. Ghostly experiences are real, but the notion of what a ‘ghost’ actually is, differs from ‘popular culture’, in the Church. It is advisable to be wary of the temptation in talking about ‘ghostly’ experiences.
