We memorized them well before kindergarten (Baptist) came in useful when we would have Bible Drills (contest to see who could find a particular Bible verse the fastest.) The benefit is knowing your way around the Bible for reading, studying, etc.
Steve Ray (former Baptist) said he used to do this as part of his “sword drills” and he was able to recite the books forwards and backwards until he became Catholic and had to include 7 more.

Hahaha, I have trouble finding the 7 now. I wonder if there is a song that includes the 7? We also learned a song with the names of the 12 disciples.

Knowing the order of the books of the Bible is more like knowing the order of the alphabet when you’re going to be using the dictionary. When you want to find something, you don’t need to flip around so long to find what you’re looking for.
Yes all should memorize the books of the Bible. And yes optimally we should commit all of God’s word to memory. There are several challenges some Bibles don’t use the same order for all books (the position of the deuterocanonical books vary) so it helps to be familiar with how those books might change position. Second in the older versions like the Douay the names of some of the books change. All of this has become less important with electronic searching.
Grace and peace,

You have no idea what a revelation it was when I found that Protestant Bibles have this section in the back called a “concordance.” I thought they were all just super-familiar with their Bibles, but then I found out they had a phrase index in a section in the back!! I had no idea!!

For me, it’s like reciting the A B C’s.
It was fun to learn it and continually have it correct.
Like memorize a certain prayer, I suppose.

I once asked a knowledgeable Catholic -
if he knew what the third book in the Bible was…
He didn’t know…second book ? Didn’t know.

Oscar Wilde said the book begins with Eve -
and ends with Revelations 😅
