When the priest says “do this in memory of me.” I was told that that recalling of what Jesus said to do makes what he did present to us so that we could make that precense of Christ known to those around us. Basically memory makes something real. This sounds good. Like it’s a deeper understanding of transubstantiation.

I heard someone on EWTN explain it kinda like this—
That another translation is “do this in rememberance”.
The word rememberance implies to bring back pieces (members) together. The opposite is to dis-member.
So that, in the Mass, we are coming together with Jesus and He is coming back to us in the appearance of bread.

Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing, the person who was preaching on it was very more eloquent than me.

Quote from song we use to sing in Baptist Church

“In remembrance of me eat this bread
In remembrance of me drink this wine
In remembrance of me
Pray for the time
When God’s own will is done”

“In remembrance of me eat this bread
In remembrance of me drink this wine
In remembrance of me
Pray for the time
When God’s own will is done”
We used to sing this in the Catholic Church I attended some years back 🙂

But if i lost my memory that doesn’t mean that the only way for me to live in reality is for my loved ones to recall memories of my life. I’m still alive, I’m still a person, even though I may not be conscious of those around me. Thats what reality is, it’s objective, not subjective.
