I was going to post this in another thread, but at the risk of derailing that, I thought I would make my own.

There are massive generalizations in this forums- mostly subtle and not so subtle thinking that a man has to be told what to do, or nagged… “What if he’s an immature child?” and the like. Or perhaps that all men are secretly lustful beings, or using porn behind their wives’s backs [and so the wives are told to cut off the internet…]. The example I like to give here is cheating-- there are two old threads buried around in the forum logs. A woman and a man’s- they were engaged. The man cheated. He started a thread first, asking what to do. He said it was a horrid mistake, would never do it again, and it tortured him what he did. People comforted him, he was sincere in his apologies, and urged him to not tell his fiancee [he had already confessed, and told by the priest to be quiet about it]. But he did not wish to lie, and told her.

She, upset, wrote her own thread a few days later. Now people told her that she had to postpone the wedding, or even leave him. They said that he was an alcoholic, and that a cheater is always a cheater. The answers were so radically different that when I read through both sections at the same time, I find myself confused. For some reason, a man is at horrid fault when it’s his lover posting, but at times when he himself gets online, people back him up.

And from my time here, it’s usually women who write threads in anger about their apparently porn-addicted husbands when they aren’t having sex… but of course when a husband writes his wife isn’t interested, the replies usually consist of asking nicely “Is she depressed?”

Of course there is also the lovely threads, like where I wished to post something similar to this, about women submitting to their husband. Immediately at least a handful of women will balk at the idea, citing “What if he’s immature” or another excuse not to relinquish control of their household.

I know this doesn’t apply to all women on these forums, but it is often enough that I can’t read through these threads without being offended on behalf of men. For some reason, while men are toted as the Head of the Household in most ways, when it comes down to individual men, they are usually being berated. By their wives. On a public forum.

… Listen, shockingly, my boyfriend is immature . He plays video games, goes to bed at 3 am, etc. But so do I- video games are fun, I can’t ever fall asleep before dawn and giggle at childish things too. But when we have to be mature, we are. It really isn’t that hard. I saw him recently- we’re long distance, he’s a Brit and I live in the States. I went there for a little over a week. The activities ranged from video games to going to the theatre as the best dressed couple that we could see. And as I was struggling a good deal with OCD at the time, I found myself falling into a panic attack every so often. He made certain I was alright every single time- he held me, he stayed late if I wouldn’t be alright alone, he humoured my stupid requests of hand washing a thousand times a day. And I trust him completely. Do I worry? Of course, I have OCD, it’s almost engrained that I’ll worry over stupid things. But it doesn’t mean that I think I know everything and my love is some sort of child that has to be told what to do, or else the house will implode. I did have to follow him about London, as I’ve never been, and unlike when I was the lead in Poland, we never got lost. And oddly, I’ve never really felt the urge to come online and tell a bunch of strangers that my boyfriend is apparently a moron.

Well, I have to agree. People here do make judgement calls and then usually end up giving very bad advice.

I recently unsubscribed to a thread where an OP had written about her situation. I won’t get into it, but someone immediately answered by implying that they never should have gotten married and her husband may not be the one for her. That and that she was selfishly tormenting someone for getting married in the first place. After some discussion and me trying to get that poster to settle down and be a little more diplomatic, it made them even more antagonistic to the point where they even offered the idea that the marriage may have been invalid.

I could not stay on that forum any longer. A judgement was made by someone who didn’t know the whole story and they formed a completely erroneous opinion and practically lectured the OP to do what they themselves thought best.

I found that disturbing to say the least and knowing I would just get more angry and the other poster wouldn’t budge in their opinion, I unsubscribed from the thread. But not before advising the OP to consider all of our answers wisely and to seek help elsewhere, probably from her parish priest.

It really is upsetting that someone can urge another to fall from Catholic teaching and not be concerned in the least that their view may be faulty - especially since no one knows every situation in it’s entirety and taken from all sides.

When someone asks for advice, we need to listen and ask for clarification. If we don’t get any, the best we can do is be charitable and offer opinions in such a way that the OP knows it is opinion and not a lecture on what they did wrong. In most instances, the OP is asking because they feel guilty, and an approach such as the above will do her soul more damage. Not only that, but the person giving the bad advice will likely have some responsibility if that person decides to take the advice and do the wrong thing. Not a good situation for either party.

Yeah, that’s what you get when you try to seek personal advice on internet forums. 😛

I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s noticed this. Thanks for this post. Be warned, I’m sure you will take a lot of heat for this.

I’ve noticed this too, but I don’t think things are as bad as they were a few years ago, for what it’s worth. On recent threads, men with misbehaving wives have received the same level of support that the women traditionally receive. A few years ago, I remember that some women began starting “what I love about my DH” types of threads, because the bias had become so obvious.

I’ve also noticed that the most blatant anti-male posts come from the same 3 or 4 users, and adding them to your ignore list could make the site much more pleasant to read.

I saw a recent thread that sounds similar. You might be interested in knowing that the user in question was eventually banned, and the thread “exorcised” of the problematic posts. The moderators do pay attention in situations like this.

One thing I like about these forums is that although not perfect, they really are quite well moderated. Much better than most. 🙂

Excellent post 👍 You took words right out of my mouth!

I too find many women who attack men at every chance they get. Everything from:
  • he watches porn…must be a terrible husband - annul the marriage
  • he looks at other women - must be a terrible husband - annul the mariage
  • he went to a strip joint - divorce him right now and then annul the marriage
  • he wants you to be the primary caregiver to your children - how dare he treat you like a child - stand up to him and tell him that you will not be subordinate in this marriage.🤷
I too have been attacked in threads b/c I never suggest divorce and I always try to push for reconciliation in a marriage. I occassionally suggest trial separations to help get the marriage back on track. We only hear the OP’s side of the story, so no one of CAF should EVER suggest divorce as a first attempt to resolve a situation!!!

I too get very frustrated that people who call themselves Catholic go on these threads and make swift judgements and attack the husband. Marriage is a sacrament, not a trial situation that can easily be remedied with divorce.

This is half a bump, and half an added comment.

I’m skimming another thread right now… OP wants a girlfriend who respects him, and doesn’t looked down on him because of bad relationships. The replies assume he’s anything from a tyrant to someone who won’t ever help his wife or even that he wants a child and not a woman.

Wow… I, uh… wow. I thought that respect was a thing we give to people on a general basis. And that woman do respect the man they date/marry. Not assume they’re scum on our shoe until they prove themselves as men. They are sons of God, made in His image, formed in the gender that His Son was and is. Surely that’s deserving of respect.

There have been threads like this before and they are generally correct, you noticed a lot OP 🙂

The issue is that each person brings to these forums their own world view. Few, if any, are trained counselors nor are most deacons or apologists.

They know what they know from their own study and what they were taught by their families and the church growing up. It’s not that people are wrong or right, it’s just you have to realize that there is a little bit of themselves in most of their posts (mine included).

And that’s a good thing if you can realize that is the case. Sometimes there is good advice, sometimes bad. I believe a number of our female posters have been hurt severely by some pretty rude, mean and unsentimental men. Take than into account when you see the “looked a porn, he’s an addict, LEAVE HIM” threads 🙂

But it’s a good community, people trying to give the best advice they can - and as someone said, it is an internet forum so anonymity allows people to sometimes say things they only wish they could say in person.

As we have to point out often here, no one is perfect.

If we’re thinking about the same topic, then you’re beinga little biased yourself. Even the title of that thread concerns younger, very young women, casting them in the opposite light to the older, more jaded ones. The conclusions go much further than merely not wanting to be blamed for someone’s past misfortunes. You’ve got to be very cool with the facts if you’re going to filter out the bias properly. I understand your backlash, but you’re being a bit emotional there. 😉

As for the advice people give, well, it’s always geared to the particular asker. People are sympathetic to those who come asking. People empathise. They aren’t dealing with the other party. Then the other party comes in, unrecognised, gets the same kind of advice. Any advice is as good as the facts the asker gives, as well as skewed by the compassion of those who give it.

I don’t actually think men are getting such bad press here, you know, or some unequal treatment. I’d have to think for a while before I came up with anything.

Well, yeah, men tend to be told to work on the marriage and go through all the bad things the wife does, being her ultra-enduring prince charming, while women tend to get advice along the lines of he needs to get his act together, but the difference isn’t so overwhelming. You’ll see plenty of threads about women’s online friends and people generally consistently say the wife needs to stop that chatting. While a man in such circumstances will receive the advice to do whatever he can to recapture the affections of his wife (and look for faults in himsels) and a woman will typically receive the advice to look at the validity of the marriage, again, I can’t say the difference is all-shaking.

But it’s a good thing to have it brough to attention because it will help us all evaluate our perspectives. And that’s a good thing.
