Montanaman you sound like a real man, someone who is all too aware of his responsibilities and is doing everything possible to provide for his family.

I too am married to a workaholic. God blessed him with a new job this year where he is NOT ALLOWED to work weekends and so we finally are all getting to have a lot of family time together 9 years after our first child was born (we have 3).

What came to mind when I read your post is DO YOU HAVE A SABBATH? It is a commandment from God and of the church that we take a full day off each week from all work. You must take that time if you call yourself a Catholic and a Christian. Without knowing exactly what line of work you are in I don’t want to appear naive or judgmental but for you and your families well-being spiritually, mentally, emotionally and especially health wise you must take time off EVERY WEEK. You cannot make more money or work harder when you are exhausted. Coming home and zoning out as a drooling mess means total exhaustion. When you work this much your wife is also working this much too and is never getting any time off either, in fact she is living as a single mother virtually. I’m sure she could join you drooling on the couch!

“A change is a good as a rest”. If you are both with your heads down working, working, working every day with no variety of any kind you cannot survive like that. I believe if you trust God and step out in faith and really start to take a true Sabbath every week you will not see it affect you financially. Is there ANYONE (maybe at your parish) who could take the kids for a few hours on a Sunday so you and your wife could have some time alone together, these kind of simple things will renew you and keep your marriage strong.

You both sound totally stressed out and exhausted, this is a signal for change. You sound like a great guy, especially because you chose this forum to vent! Good for you, take it as a sign from God that you came here. We care about you and your situation. I will pray for you and your family tonight. God bless you, you don’t have to do it all, Jesus wants to take your heavy burden and make it light.

Here is a small start - stop on your way home- pick some flowers. Bring them home. Doesn’t cost anything, shows appreciation. Small things go a long way.

I really think you did a good job in expressing yourself…I understand the distance between you and GOD at the moment, and it’s ok, because everyone has doubts and feelings once in a while…I have been there with the tight situations and the feelings of neglect and doubt…still living with them!! LOL

And I am going to tell you something you might not like because I am living proof of this!! DONT DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM GOD! Don’t let your burdens become an excuse for you to not want GOD in your life during good or bad times! Believe me I am there!! LOL And definitely now it’s not the time to distance yourself from GOD…The more prayers you say the better you feel and the more strength you find in those prayers to deal with miserable situations…

I came here to forums with a dilemma, I come here all the time and sob all over the place, I know sad and pathetic, but I find comfort in hearing loving members of our church and loving followers of GOD! I get so emotional and so happy being here! I feel at home! Yes we are not in person but the comfort they give makes me feel hope and I start praying and feel so silly because “How in the world could I let something so stupid bother me!”

Right now what you need to do is keep your head up and and your hopes high!

Starting a new business is difficult for someone undeducated about it-meaning your wife- I am not saying she has no education or anything like that, but about the business deals and ventures…I am sure she knows what it is but the understanding of dedication concept is probably what she’s having a difficult time with…I hope I am wording this right, seems lately I keep offending everyone around me with my wrong wording?! 😦

I do not mean to offend please do not get offended…

If you seriously just can’t find the time to get close to GOD, then just once in a great while, say “thank you GOD!” look around you, the beautiful sky, the “old cars” you might own, the house you live in, you did your best and GOD was there holding you up every step of the way! Making sure you succeeded in your venture…And if that’s just impossible…then talk to your wife…

Teach her about the company, spend 30 minutes, heck 15 mins if you can to tell her from your heart what the job requires of you…the more she learns the more understanding she will be…

I know that when my father started his business he dedicated every day 1 hour to my mother to explain the situation and he even took her around the company to show her what’s going on, and after that she stopped with her “nagging” and her sadness of him being gone most of the day…and she learned to appreciate him…

So think about that…Congratulations on your successfull business GOD willing it will pick up and even during slow seasons you will be bountiful!

God bless, hang in there and good luck!

Another thought Montanaman, what about connecting to Catholic Men’s groups in the DC Metro area? Some may offer a monthly business breakfast or something similar. I know my husband has found his friendships with other Catholic men who are in a similar situation to be a great help. Here is a list published in Jan 2009 of group and organizations in your area.

I think it’s important not to isolate yourself in your work. Spending time with others can help you know you’re not alone, give you encouragement and even solutions to some issues. One of the men my husband met has helped him tremendously with the IT side of his own business. (He has a full-time job plus his own business). They have also become great friends and our families get together for dinner etc.

Every blessing to you and your family.

Do you think that your wife might like to go back to work, at least part time? Not every woman is cut out to be a stay at home mom. I know my sister gets very depressed being home full time and is happiest being able to work 2 to 3 days a week.
I have a friend like this. She’s an awesome mom either way, but she is happiest when she is working part time.

Still, I think you should move to an area with a lower cost of living.

Hang in there. Adjusting to life with little kids is rough. Dh and I had a tough time of it, I know. It gets easier. 🙂

Perseverance

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. ~Jacob A. Riis

Make time for your family.

Update (and thank you everyone for the good ideas, advice and prayers):

I think I got to the bottom of some of the stress and dissatisfaction she’s feeling. I suppose I should have guessed it, but hey, I’m not exactly known for my keen sense of perception.

Heh.

Anyway, the Montanaman household is about to increase by one member. I’m very happy about this. She’s happy too, but also irritable, ecstatic, depressed, starving and nauseous. Spin the board and toss a dart at any time during the day and you’ll hit one of them.

Lol. Life. Go fig.
