I have a friend who is asking my dh and I for some advice and he is in a real difficult situation. His wife is in her late 40’s and apparently going through menopause. Another important bit of information is that she has two sister with bipolar personality disorder.

This is what has happened. Before Christmas of 2008, in October, his wife told our friend that she wanted to go visit her mother who lives in another state with their children, who they homeschool. He was fine with that. When she got up there, she called him up and told him that she did not want to hear from him by phone or email for some time. He was confused. I was too for I talked with her just a week before she left and she was fine. She was frustrated with her mother-in-law who lives with them, but not her husband, she defended him. She did leave her husband five years earlier also and they were separated for one year, but got back together after a retreat. Anyway, after two weeks, her husband thought it was time to call her and he did and she told him that she was not coming back and she was going to enroll the kids in a school up in that state she was in and she was going to live with her mom. Everyone was surprised. She did come down for an “estate sale” and I had a chance to talk to her about her marriage. She told me that she was tired of verbal abuse in her marriage and she told me that her husband was still doing pornography. That was one of the major reasons she left him five years earlier. This time she thinks he was doing child porn and that frightened her and she did not trust him to be alone with the kids. She was acting paranoid. By the way, she left him alone all the time when they lived together for she was always going out shopping. She left him when she could no longer go out shopping because he lost his well paying job due to being caught watching porn at work. So financially they were not doing well. So that was another stress on their marriage, besides the porn addiction. She put all the blame on her husband, but after she left, I came to find out that her moods would change and she would be so angry that she would hit and throw things at her husband. She was the violent one and apparently still is. I will say the times I have talked to her, she is very very angry and almost speak as if she hates her husband.

Well, at first her husband accepted everything for the sake of keeping peace for the kids. Most men would not have and also he knew he screwed up in many many areas. He apologized so many times to her. He is in a sexual addiction support group and is in counseling. He has a spiritual director as well. He goes to confession weekly and has even admitted to me that he wants to do porn and has to fight the desire daily. He was molested as a child. He has been doing porn for more than 35 years. He almost hates himself. Anyway, he use to call his children daily and pray with them when they first moved up north. His oldest son always wanted to talk to him and his youngest son. His oldest son is 12 and the youngest is 6. The mom has now poison the minds of the two girls and the youngest boy and they do not want to talk to their dad on the phone. So the dad who loves to spend daily time with them found it difficult to only see them once a month for he drove up north from here in Florida to see them. That was too hard on him emotionally. Even when he did go up, his wife sometimes would not allow him to see the kids. One time the kids wanted him to see them sing in the choir and she said he will not go to the same church she goes to. He did not go. He will do all she ask for he does not want a divorce and knows if he does anything legal to see his kids, she will file for a divorce for that is how angry she is. They still have a joint banking account and she withdrawls money, a lot, monthly sometimes leaving him without anything. All his brothers and we have told him to only give her child support and that is it, but he doesn’t want to get her upset. Well not he has rented a room up in the same state near the kids and still she won’t allow him to see the kids daily. He will only see the kids once a month and only when she says so and only under supervision.

This dad has talked with Fr. Groesheal from EWTN. I hope I spelled his name correctly. He also spoke with the wife and said that this woman is suffering from menopause. He feels the husband needs to be patient, but that he may need to involve the domestic violence people for his wife is violent with him and could be with the children for she was that angry with him on the phone and unstable. He said he has seen this in many menopausal women. This woman refuses to see that she may be going through menopause. She has been though a lot emotionally too, for prior to all this she had a miscarriage.

This friend of ours, has come to us again. He says he has prayed and prayed and doesn’t know what to do. If this is indeed menopause, this can last up to 10 years. I asked him if he was willing not to be part of his children’s life for 10 years. I think he should take legal action, but he feels that is not what God is telling him to do, but than he says he doesn’t know what God is telling him. I feel his pain and struggle and confusion.

Has any man been in this situation or similiar situation? Any advice would be appreciated. This man knows he has made huges mistakes and he is not forgiving himself of them and beaten himself up for it daily. He is getting the help he needs, but he wants to see his children daily who he loves and he can’t. He doesn’t want a divorce and fears it if he takes legal actions to see his kids. What would you do?

The rest of this whole saga aside…This is an antiquated view of menopause. Women do NOT go emotionaly crazy when in menopause. While I do like Fr Groshel, I wonder if he actually said this, and if he did then he should not be practicing psychology (I believe he has a degree in it) Menopause is a natural occurance and it is very degrading to women when things like this are said. Yes sometimes hormonal imbalance may cause mood swings but it does not change one’s personality. It was attitudes like this that caused many women in the past to be put on severe mind altering drugs by doctors who treated menopause as a mental disorder. Sorry, but this just makes me angry.

I don’t know for sure the exact words of this holy priest for I was not there. I am only telling you what he told us. So he would be adding to it or leaving out things, who knows. That is the problems with hear say.

Anyway, this is too complicated for us. It is hard for we know both of them, but I will say that this woman’s behavior has changed. I know her behavior has gone from really down at times to really high where I don’t know where she gets all her energy from. Other times I have seen her really depressed and her husband said she would not even come down to eat dinner at times or shower. So she did have mood swings prior this this and anger outburst, but it is not at its worst. The last time I spoke to her, she spoke about him with hatred. When he moved up there to be closer to the kids, she came down here without his knowledge and rented a U-haul and some men and cleaned out the house and sold the furniture up there. He was in a car accident and won a settlement of a large sum of money and he put the check into their joint account and she took half the money and has now disappear for some time. She said she was on vacation, but he kids are still in school. She turned off her cell so he doesn’t know where his kids are at.

We all adviced him months ago to get his own bank account for she has her own, but he has not done so yet. His body is the one that was in the car accident and mess up and the settlement was to pay his medical bills, but not he doesn’t have enough money. He is so angry. They have some serious problems.

Like Kage said, I think we will just listen to them if they call but tell them to seek advice from professionals. But if all of you could pray for them for I think they are all suffering and I think the four kids are suffering the most.

Yikes! It sounds like this couple needs family counseling. If they are strugging with money and willing to do whatever it takes…encourage them to consider a retrouvaille retreat. Hopefully there is one not to far away. retrouvaille.org/

Also their local chapter of Catholic charities may have a list of counselors who will help them on a sliding scale. I agree there is more to this than just menopause. I think this has started a long time ago. Who knows there also may be a deep rooted problem, like manic depressive disorder with the wife. And his addictive behavior is not helping either, but his apparent effort to get this under control shows that he is at the least making a serious try to heal. They need your prayers and I will add mine as well.

The wife will not go to any more counseling together with her husband and they have been to many. They have been to retrouvaille and had a great couple giving them counseling afterwards too. They were frank with both of them. This retrouvaille couple told the husband that he had to work on himself before the couple could get back together and told her to work on herself too. That is where it was left. They also saw many priest for counseling, at least four of that I know of and known of them could help them for they all said that the wife doesn’t want help at this point for she blames the husband for it all. She feels that he is the one with all the problems and he needs help. That is what she told me too when I talk to her.

“nana”… this is just my humble opinion; but it sounds to me as though the there are two root problems here… which may well be “feeding” one another.

You say that bi-polar has run in her family? The wife may indeed be suffering from bi-polar, and needs treatment. I would agree with the others, that menopause is not the problem.

And the husbands addiction to pornography. That is a BIGGIE. I don’t blame her for removing the children, under those circumstances.

They both need to seek serious counseling for their respective problems. And then, maybe try Retrovouille.

I will keep them in my prayers. It’s a sad situation.

Getting fired from a job for pornography is really serious. My beloved husband has the same issue and it is killing me. She probably isn’t bipolar. She is just suffering from years of riding a roller coaster and she can’t do it anymore without getting sick to her stomach. Usually, when a man is so involved in porn that he gets fired he is also on chat lines, dating sites, and is having multiple affairs. She may even have STD’s you don’t know about. Our priests are trying to figure out how to help my husband as we speak. He has also had help from doctors that did not help. I would just pray for both and try not to get too involved.

Excellent advice.
I’ll add too that it sounds like he is saying she is going through menopause as perhaps that is the sum total reason for her moving out. I think that it’s best to be a compassionate listener to friends or family going through problems, but to not get too immersed, because ultimately, when he tells the story, you hear his version, when she tells it, you hear her version. Somewhere in the middle, is the truth of the whole thing.

I feel badly that he is so enslaved to porn…and that he was molested. How sad.😦

I’ll keep this couple in my prayers. Unfortunately, it’s the kids who are losing out in all of this drama.

Thanks for your prayers for them for they certainly need it. I do agree that they both have their own side to the story and the truth is in the middle of it all. The kids are the ones suffering in all this. I do know that the oldest son wants to see his dad very much and has run away at times to see him and meet his dad. I think his mom should allow his kids to see their dad more. If this went to court, he would be. The girls are afraid because she has told them of the pornography and how he wants their body. At least that is what the dad has told us. We don’t know for sure for I have not talked to the mom recently. I know that the last time I talked to her she was trying to convince me to never leave my daughter, who is 9, ever alone with her husband for he would molest her.

All I do is pray for this couple. I do not talk to the husband anymore. He talks to my husband, but my dh only listens for my dh thinks he should take legal actions to see his kids, but this man doesn’t want to do this so my dh stays quiet for now and just listens. I do believe that his man is trying with all his heart to get the help he needs to fight his addiction to porn and he admits it is not easy. He goes to weekly confession and he says sometimes he ends up going before the end of the week and goes to daily Mass.

I don’t know if anyone has ever heard of this, but his wife says that he has an addiction to “religion.” She told me that he is obsessed with religion and so is his mother. That is what she calls the daily Mass and weekly Confessions. I know that just before she decided to move up north, she talked to me at a homeschool event and complained about her MIL “shoving religion down” her kids throats. I asked her what did she mean and she meant that this woman always talked about Jesus and the Catholic Church and praying the Rosary and she said that there was more to life than that. I was shocked to hear that. I thought that was a good thing. I would love my daughter to have a grandma living with her that spoke like that to her. Apparently, she did not like it. I know that bothered her a lot. One time I was over at her house on New Years Eve and her MIL wanted to go to Holy Hour and be there at midnight to be with Jesus. I didn’t mind, but we lived far and wanted to head out before then. We could drop her off and offered to take her there, but they had to pick her up afterwards. She did not agree and was angry. She told her MIL that they were staying home and her MIL said that she thought it would be nice to be with Jesus right to welcome the new year. My friend answered, “No, I think it would be better to stay here with my family.” I could understand both, but I saw the sadness in this old woman’s eyes for this would be the first year she was not there at midnight. The years before she drove herself, but she was getting older and could not drive for her vision was getting worse. They did not want to go out and pick her up after midnight. All they were going to do was say “Happy New Years” to one another and kiss each other and go to bed. Her son offered to pick her up, but the wife said no way. So I think the wife resented the MIL and her strong faith and called it an addiction. I think that her husband wanted to be at Holy Hour too, but he was afraid to say anything. But she did tell me that her MIL and her husband were “addicted to the Catholic Church.” That was a major reason also, according to what she told me, why she left her husband too.

"She told me that she was tired of verbal abuse in her marriage and she told me that her husband was still doing pornography. That was one of the major reasons she left him five years earlier. This time she thinks he was doing child porn and that frightened her and she did not trust him to be alone with the kids. She was acting paranoid."

Honestly? If my husband had a problem with porn, and it got to the point where he was viewing child porn, I too would be running to the hills with my children and doing everything in my power to keep him from seeing them. Porn changes the way our brain chemistry works; check out what Norman Doidge M.D.has to to say how pornorgraphy changes the brain…very scary stuff!

If the dad was fired for viewing porn at work, then he really does have a problem because he has no control over it. It has control over him.

(Actually, my marriage did end because of porn. My ex-husband thought there was nothing wrong with it. Following that, he saw nothing wrong with opening our marriage either.)
