Hello! I am looking around for a good men’s, pre-Vatican II handmissal. It is for a friend of mine’s wedding gift. I got his wife a Bride’s Manual prayer book, and was hoping there would be something similar for men/grooms, but could not find anything. It seems that the Catholic products aimed primarily at men are a recent phenomenon.

Ideally, it would not be too overwhelmin/thick, with just Sunday readings and reflections (this guy is still a Catholic who is not going to mass every Sunday, but the Lord is slowly drawing him back to the faith, and there is now at TLM in his town. He does appreciate the TLM. I see this as a positive way to encourage him to keep going to mass).

If I can’t find anything, I will likely just settle on a St. Joseph’s handmissal.

Also, does anyone know of any companies who make holy cards with custom messages on the back? Looking to make one of St. John Chrysostom, as I quoted him in the best man speech.

What characteristics would make a hand missal specifically a “man’s” missal?

IIRC, Angelus Press has the Fr. Lasance Catholic Young Man’s Guide. It has the TLM but other devotions as well. It’s not a missal per se, but a devotional manual. Otherwise, if you really want to treat him, the Roman Catholic Daily Missal from Angelus Press. That covers pretty much everything - TLM, Epistles & Gospels, Festal propers, etc.

I can’t post their contact info but just google Angelus Press Roman Catholic Daily Missal and it should come up.

If you don’t want to go through Angelus Press, I think TAN Books has it too.

The Lasance missal is also a gift any traditionalist Catholic would be very happy to receive:

Obviously it’s not “new” anymore. Tant mieux!

Well, there are apparently a couple of updates, as we last discussed 😉
Some updates here and there are not the same as a “new” missal. I think I am correct in saying that Lasance has the second Confiteor and retains the pre-1955 rubrics for Good Friday (with the word “perfidis” and no “flectamus genua” for the Jews). I got my copy in 1996 and they may have made revisions since then.

The reader shouldn’t interpret this as my endorsing the use of the older, more severe rubrics in this case.
