Merging dioceses - how common is it?

Without a suffragan diocese, a diocese would not be an arch-diocese
There is such a thing as an Archdiocese with no suffragettes - Australia has two: Hobart and Canberra-Goldburn.
Canada has one such Archdiocese too (Winnipeg).

Father, this is correct. However, when an Archdiocese has no suffragettes, the Archbishop isn’t considered a Metropolitan.

The Archdiocese of Washington (DC) used to be one of these archdioceses from 1947 until 1965, when the Diocese of St. Thomas (USVI) was made the sole suffragan diocese to Washington (elevating the Archbishop to a Metropolitan Archbishop before being named Washington’s first Cardinal Archbishop a little over a year later).
