Through all the sorrow we have shed:

But yet we have found comfort in the song,

Safe in the Arms of Jesus,

Safe on His Gentle Breast,

Sweetly His Soul Shall Rest.

An example of a strong spiritual basis of a community.

A time when it was ok to be a Housewife. And a man to be a Farmer. Graduate High School, buy a house, A Farm.

I have not put together a list of prices (“Price Tags”) on American life of 1950 - working on it. Real Life stuff after Church.

A time when the USA had God in schools - Moment of Silence, Pledge of Allegiance. Jesus Christ was an important part of a Community. And we were “Americans”.

Churches were jammed packed on Sundays. Seen photos of this. People were all dressed up - kids and parents. Aunts, Uncles, neighbors. And after church, families would go out for breakfast at a local restaurant. All would meet at Grandpas house afterwards. The kids would play in the backyard. Play on the Swings on a warm summer day.

1950 - “God Bless the United States of America”. And it was. For awhile…

The Cost of things in 1947…Only 3 years before and has not changed that much in 1950.

A conclusion of USA life of 1947.

Job - $2,500/yr. $208/mo, $52/wk
Worse case, $1,720/yr, $143/mo, $35/wk
Best case - $5,000/yr at a BS degree, $416/mo $100/wk
Education, typical - High School Diploma and 2 years College.
University tuition - $1,200/yr ($600/semester). Yale to Penn State.
House. - $15,000 (5 rooms, 2 car garage, 2 stories, 150X150 plot).
Rents - $30 to $50/mo (one room to 1 bedroom, 2 room Apts)
40 Acres of Farm land - $6,000.
Car. - $1,600 (Full size Chevrolet)
Gas - 23 cents/gal
Broiled Lobster dinner - $5.50. Includes Salad, French Bread, Beer.
Sirloin Steak - 65 cents/lb
T-Bone Steaks - 79 cents/lb
Income Tax - 10% -15%
Minimum Wage - 40 cents per hour ($768/yr)

All my relatives of that generation are now passed away. And with their passing, a friendly-ness, hospitality, and old school values, has also passed away…

It’s nice to reminisce about the times gone by.
I am 54 years old. Most of my family is gone also- at least from that generation.
I miss them dearly.

I can remember those times that Eagle mentioned (of course I can’t remember his entire e-mail address. In fact, I’m really OLD!!! My husband and I married in 1950 – he was a fireman and made $350 per month – I was a secretary and made almost as much. I hate to tell you how much we paid for our house – $16,750!!! I could have sold it a couple of years ago for $1,000,000 – but where would I go. My husband passed away many years ago and I thank God for the Fire Department retirement fund – I was a stay-at-home Mom and I just received a social security raise – all of $3.00 per month – I could barely get a cup of coffee at Starbucks for that amount.

My house was bought in 1959 for $17,500 and my dad earned $3,600/yr fixing Chain Saws - High School Diploma. My mother stayed home to take care of the kids…

“Real Estate” - today, these prices are not human and do not relate to the rest of the working population. The “majority”. Real Estate has been transformed from a place to live (and work)….to a money making scheme/s…”Investing”, “Renting”, “Property Tax”…All to the highest bidder and/or one who has the most money.

Yes I am. But, also realizing that we are missing something.

This USA has sold out on everything for Mammon and its worship.

Sold out to be an international nation and a free for all for the rest of the world.

So everyone(?) can make money?

And I miss them all.

I lived through the latter half of the 1950s and early 1960s when all you have written was true. Newspapers and the media in general, reflected and respected our Christian values. I lived in a very Christian community. It was better - much better - objectively. Newspapers would publish beautiful editorials about the birth of Jesus.
