MOSCOW. Oct 4 (Interfax) - Relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Vatican deteriorated to such an extent in recent years that the two churches nearly severed ties, Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Kirill, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s external relations, told a session of the Pontifical Assembly on Monday.
“In the period between the last assembly and the current one (since August 2000), relations with the Roman-Catholic Church, which have always been characterized by quite a large number of problems, underwent such serious trials that they were on the verge of their breakup on a number of occasions,” the metropolitan said.
