I am not quite sure if this is the right board to put this on… but oh well…

I am looking fora book that gives a good analysis of VII. I don’t want a schismatic pov, nor a liberal pov… but an orthodox view. I came across Davies’ book, Pope John’s Council. I was wondering if this is a good book to read about VII?

if you could recommend another, please do so. Also, is there a book that has a compendium of the Council documents, etc.

I would not recommend ANYTHING by Davies. He has a “self-styled traditionalist” mentality (and I’m not talking about the good kind of “traditionalist”).

Get a copy of Timebombs of Vatican II (Tan Publisher)

and

What went wrong with Vatican II by McInerny.

Then make up your own mind.

Michael Davies is a good Catholic writer with a strong and clear grasp of the faith. Good reading! 🙂

Tell you what, here’s some excerpts from both:

Davies

McInerny

I’m not all that sure that McInerny’s as intense of a V2 fan as Davies is an opponent, but McInerny will do for a proponent.

ok… so from what i can see i have one vote to read; another not to read. can i get someone to break the tie?

just out of curiosity, isn’t davies somehow affiliated with una voce – itsn’t that a pro-ecclesia dei organization, ergo loyal to the Holy Father?

Davies is the LAST person I would trust for information about Vatican II and then I would not count it for much truth.

Archbishop Denis E Hurley’s book is a good one.

Eye Wittness to Vatican II

Also a good editorial piece can be read Here

Michael Davies is a good author and you should read his books. Marie why are you anathemizing Michael Davies?

I try not to repeat myself, but for this I will.

“Timebombs” is as much a documentary as a reference. You will be informed, but saddened to see how much our Church has become protestant, thanks to just a few insistant and persistant church “leaders”.

The more orthodox the individual, the more they will credit Timebombs as fully truthful, and backed with hard evidence.

While I do not personally care for his writings it really has more to do with his style. He is really an excellent author of things related to the 2nd Vatican Council.

I agree: I especially like his little booklet (by TAN PUBLISHERS) “Liturgical Shipreck.” I also like Mr. John Vennari.

The Rhine Flows Into the Tiber by Father Ralph Wiltgen is the best, most evenhanded book about Vatican II in my opinion. It is written with journalistic matter-of-factness, by Father Wiltgen, who was there at the proceedings, interviewing participants, as the events occurred. He describes how the Rhine Bishops and periti (Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands) took control of Vatican II and overwhelmed the other participants through superior preparation, clever planning, organization and collaboration.

I don’t have a problem with Davies, I like his stuff too. The problem some have with him is that he is affiliated with SSPX or at least writes for some of their publications. I’ve read him, and other SSPX authors without acquiring a schismatic personality. I’m not blind to the fact, however, that there are problems within the Church.

I would suggest that you look closer into the writings of M. Davies, and his much needed objective writings of the Catholic truth. Mr. Davies is a fine Catholic and an excellent example of how Catholics should conduct themselves in life. Try to be a bit more charitable to other Catholics ,and your need to confess the sins of detraction and talebearing will subside greatly.
