Hi,

I was watching the History channel some months ago and I thought they mentioned some work by a Catholic guy on the topic of chastity and piety. I thought it was Erasmus, but I’ve searched and searched but couldn’t find anything like that.

Do you know what I’m talking about? Maybe it was post Middle Ages, whatever. Any help? I’m wanting an old work on chastity, but Catholic. Well, if it were old, it would undoubtedly be Catholic!!

Erasmus has several works where he mentions chastity. Try oll.libertyfund.org/Texts/Erasmus0096/Colloquies/0046-02_Bk.html

just because we are middle aged (or over the hill) doesn’t mean we don’t have problems with chastity any more, just that we sin more often against the 9th rather than the 6th commandment. the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, and in some cases, has ceased to function all together.

Annie, thanks for that! Yeah, I understand that people of all age groups from “adolescence” up have problems with chastity. In fact, it seems to me that the Catholics have noticed that the most, like, I’ve never heard a Protestant preacher teaching about sexual purity for those already married, and quite infrequent about those in the upper “50 percentile” of the age bracket!

I meant by “Middle Ages” though, something quite different, I meant the period of time from approximately the 500’s to the 1500’s AD. Thanks for your statements though.

thanks for taking my tweaking with your title in good spirit. the middle ages is full of writings about chastity, try Thomas Aquinas for starters, Bernard of Clariveaux and the great monastic reformers, as it seems chastity within monasteries and convents was their starting point. Erasmus is at the end of your period, overlapping with the early Reformation period.

Well, allright!

What would you recommend by St. Bernard? I’ve read some of Glories of Mary and True Devotion to Mary and those Saints quote Bernard often. He was, I understand, John Calvin’s favorite theologion (oddly enough). Anyways, those books on Mary are awesome!

What would you recommend by St. Thomas Aquinas? I’ve got his Prayer and Hymn book. Great prayers, I’ll probably start praying them soon, a friend got it for me for Christmas.
