This is now the third time I’ve edited this post… and I think this time will be the last.

grasshopper-hosting.co.uk/diocese/10Parishes/DDir_NottsLeics.html

That is a map of all Catholic Churches in your area - and it looks like most have a Vigil Mass that starts after 7:00 p.m.

I think the trend in moving up the Mass times was to make it easier for everyone to go to Midnight Mass - which, unfortunately, left you out - ironic, eh? I hope you find the Mass you’re looking for. God bless.

I have never heard of a Easter Midnight Mass. You may be thinking of Christmas.

well it definatly exists traditionaly the cathoilic vigal mas is at midnight and the protistant equivalent is at sunset.
st ethalberts at slough allways held midnight mass wether it still dose im not sure my partner moved in 1999.

thank you for the tip misterbee unfortunatly it is still to early for me but my partner might get there if he goes sraight from work.

Often the Easter Vigil commenced so that the Blessing of the Fire, Procession, Exsultet, Readings, Renewal of Baptismal Promises, and Blessing of the Paschal Candle (which all form a separate liturgical action from the first Easter Mass) could all be finished and the first Mass of Easter commence at midnight.

So, it does happen… but it is few and far between. Even then, we’re starting at 7pm, but I don’t expect us to be done much before 10pm – late enough for me! I’d go to what you can get to.

If I may also note, I was told the other day that the Easter Vigil is not to be truncated, and that if it cannot be celebrated in full, it is to be omitted; this may explain for some Churches not doing it.

Remember that Easter Vigil Mass is the traditional time for converts to the Church to be baptised and/or confirmed. Firstly it’d be a bit unfair to force them to stay up till midnight.

Secondly, for this reason among others Easter Vigil is a lot longer than, say, a Christmas midnight Mass. If it started at midnight it wouldn’t be over by 1am or 1.30, as most Christmas midnight masses are, rather 2.30 or even 3. That’s extremely late for the poor priests, who may have to double up for the daytime Easter Masses as well.

And yet in some parishes it happens at 3 a.m. and they finish with the sunrise and a parish breakfast. I guess it’s what you get used to. Our priest was ready to have a vigil at 8:30 pm in one parish and one at 5 am in our parish but the choir changed his mind – so we had no vigil in our parish at all. Personally, I’d have been at the 5 am. one in a heartbeat.

Hi,

Easter Vigil is not at midnight.

Also, “your partner” …what does that refer to?

Ken

Okay, Ken, I’ll sound like the mother I am – DON’T BE SO NOSEY!! (I, personally, assumed he or she meant “business partner” unless s/he chooses to state otherwise.)

When Pope Pius changed the Holy Week masses in the late 50’s the Vigil mass usually started about 11pm, and the consecration had to be after mid-night. There were no afternoon or evening masses permitted at that time. Once afternoon masses were introduced in the later 60’s, the vigil was moved back to earlier in the evening.

Huh? I was!

As I already indicated, the Mass proper would begin near midnight – the rest of it, being technically a separate liturgical act, having taken place beforehand. The whole thing could be over before 1am.

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL!
here in my part of the UK(nottingham) our easter vigil is at 8.00 p.m.,as to the person who has a "partner"it refers to (mainly)people living as man and wife, same sex or not.i’m afraid it is replacing the proper term for a married couple, especially here in england, also on all our legal forms the word “forename” replaces “christian name” so as not to offend different religions, why???. hope this helps.mick.

Thank you englishguy an irisham . just to clarify the isue my partner is my fiancey ( as you can see i strugle with the spelling hence using the term partner) and we are a heterosexulal couple .

why dose using the term offend so many of you? i have had enquirys as who and what my partner is on other posts!

it is nice to know that the midnight mas still exists and happy easter!😃

In the US, the word partner is frequently the term used in a committed homosexual relationship, a point that they are unable to legally marry. That’s why you are getting questioned.

“England and America. Two countries separated by a common language.” 😃
