Military chaplains and the Eucharist

Is it true that a Catholic priest at the front lines of battle where it is necessary can partake of the Eucharist more than 2 or 3 times a day if it is necessary?

I wonder what the record is for any Catholic to receive the eucharist in one day?

Since it isn’t against church law to receive twice in one day I guess someone could receive twice–be involved in a car wreck later on the same day and in danger of death could receive viaticum which would mean three times in that day.

Has any Catholic chaplain in the military ever received more than three times in one day?

Any priest may, for pastoral reasons & with his Bishop’s permission, celebrate three times per day and that necessitates receiving Communion. Our pastor, for 4 years, celebrated 3 Masses on Christmas Eve: 2 in our parish and one at the Mission in another community. Then one in each church on Christmas Day.

Canon 905 §1. A priest is not permitted to celebrate the Eucharist more than once a day except in cases where the law permits him to celebrate or concelebrate more than once on the same day.

§2. If there is a shortage of priests, the local ordinary can allow priests to celebrate twice a day for a just cause, or if pastoral necessity requires it, even three times on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Regarding your question about how many times is a record or if any Catholic chaplain has received more than three times in one day, I am sorry but personally I fail to see any importance in those questions. Can you share more about why this could be important to you?

FYI…as a retired U.S. Marine…with a son who has been to Iraq several times…I can tell you firsthand that priest-chaplains often celebrate more than three Holy Masses in one day (don’t know what the record is)…especially on Sunday…and most especially in combat…in the field. So they are allowed to receive Holy Communion as often as required to do their mission for the troops–to bring to them…the Lord Jesus Christ in Word and in Sacrament…the Holy Eucharist…so they celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as often as required to carry out this sacred duty and mission.

I love everyone or these “guys”…they never, never, ever let you down…no matter what…they are a man’s man…and they preach like you may not be around the next day…no fuzzy-soft-ball sermons or watered down teachings of the Magisterium. They always used to tell me when I argued with them about a Church teaching…that if I wanted something watered down…tell the bartender next time I “bellied-up” to the bar for a drink!

When you think about how secularized…anti-religion…culture of death…dictatorship of relativism…our (governmental ageny) society has become…it is really incredible that we still have chaplains in the military. Sounds like a “no-brainier” to provide chaplains for the military…but so did marriage between one man and one woman…and raising a child is best done by the mother and father who are committed in marriage to each other and their family…now all or that is being threatened…or already crumbling.

One other point about priest-chaplains…if President Obama and the (Democrat) Congress work together to change/rescind the “don’t ask-don’t tell” military law re gays serving in the USA Military…our priest chaplains are going to put into the position of violating their general working principal while serving in the military: “…cooperate but without compromise…”. They will have a hard time working in that environment without ignoring or violating the Church’s teaching on homosexuality and homosexual acts.

participating in another Mass.
